Holidays around the corner
I am so crackin' excited for Christmas. I already got a Christmas card in the
mail. Strings of lights have started popping up on houses. Personally I'm holding
off on putting up my decorations until it's actually December. I like to try
to contain Christmas in one month. Seeing Christmas decorations on the shelves
right after Halloween... Ick.
And OH, the Christmas paraphernalia. Here are some shopping sightings that
should get you in the holiday mood...
Books: "12
Days of Christmas Pop-Up Book" I love pop up books and this one is
amazing.
"How the Grinch Stole Christmas", the movie looks creepy so just
read the book which you can get in the deluxe
edition and the Latin
edition, which tells the story in Latin, with a translation dictionary of
the words in the back.
Olive the Other
Reindeer Olive is one of Loobylu's
favorite things and it's easy to see why.
Music: Muppets
Christmas CD, favorite parts of this CD, Miss Piggy shouting "Piggy
pudding?!" and Beakers turn in Twelve Days of Christmas "meep meep
meep meep meeeeeep".
Martha
Stewart's Christmas CD, in my eyes this woman can do no wrong. It's a love/
hate thing.
Charlie
Brown's Christmas CD, classic classic. I watch the TV special every year.
The sad little tree Charlie Brown brings home and Linus's reading of the Christmas
story on at the Christmas program. *sniff*
I already got the Celestial
Seasonings Holiday Tea. Very festive and yummy. And my lips are pepperminty
from the candy cane lipshine I got at the Gap.
Maybe I'd better start shopping for other people on my list now.

I was feeling pretty good yesterday after my flu shot. Joel had the forsight to remind me to take tylenol first. My arm didn't ache at all.
But I think it made me stupid for the day. I am feeling the effects today yet. I can't remember certain words. It's making conversation and blogging a chore.

A
rose cookie by any other name...
When did the name of Hydrox cookies change to Droxies?
Not that I blame them. Why would you eat a Hydrox when you can eat an Oreo?
The word "Hydrox" does not sound like a tasty snack. It sounds like
a medicine. Or something poisonous, like Clorox. Is there Alpha Hydrox in it?
If I rub one on my face will it make my face feel soft and smooth?
They claim this
is why they named them Hydrox.
I feel the same way about Ovaltine.
Would you rather have Nestles Quik or Ovaltine? When I was little I thought
"Ovaltine" was some sort of digestive aid like Metamucil. It sounds
like "Listerine".

Thanksgiving everyday! I didn't get enough starch last thursday. Today I had mashed potatoes and stuffing for lunch. That's all. Sometimes I will get mashed potatoes and french fries or a baked potato. Maybe some pasta on the side. They don't call me starch girl for nothing. *snnnzzzzzzz*

I thought I was bad, with my daydreams of winning the gold medal in Olympic
ice skating. Oh yes, I plan out my Vera Wang costume and routine music. I plot
out how I would glide effortlessly across the ice as I gather up my roses tossed
down by my fans. I imagine how I would be just the right combination of weepy
and smiley on the podium as I mouth the words to the national anthem. *ahem*
As I said... I thought I was bad, 'til I read Tina's blog about her "Afflecktion".
Not only did I fall off my chair snorting with laughter, but I feel a little
less alone in my imaginary world.

Who's the fairest of them all?
I remember I was a freshman in high school, when I got my first real camera
to take with me on my Latin class trip to Italy. We were in Rome sitting on
couches in a hotel lobby, when I looked up at the ceiling and saw that it was
covered with mirrors. It was then that I first thought to point my camera to
the mirrors and capture the entire group and myself, taking the picture.
Since then I have shot many "mirror shots" in elevator doors, darkened
windows, chrome bumpers and of course... mirrors. Last year I was pleasantly
surprised to discover I was not the only one. Heather from harrumph.com
not only shot pictures of this genre, but she had the idea to group them all
together in what she calls "Jezebel's
Mirror". She has scads more than I do.
All of my shots thus far have been on film. While I was in Las Vegas for Comdex,
I had a DC 4800 at my disposal, so I got my first digital mirror shot. I sent
it to her for her site FOJM...
Friend's of Jezebel's Mirror.
And here
it is. (When the page opens up, another mirror picture will load, not mine...wait a moment and my picture will pop up)

Tapioca
milk tea reported on by CNN. "A popular import from Taiwan, the frothy beverage is
a mix of tea, milk, sugar and giant black tapioca balls served hot or cold.
" Guhhh. I'm not so sure about this. Imagine slurping on your beverage
and then... GLUCK!... a big ball of gumminess gets shlucked through your straw.
Gluck, gluck, gluck! Bubble

Just as I am getting ready to head back up north, my dad is getting ready to go deer hunting with my grandfather and uncle. Every fall they pack up the truck with vienna sausages and sleeping bags and head to the family cabin on their annual hunting trip.
They haven't come home with a deer in years. I always feel sad for my dad when he comes dragging home empty handed, but also I feel secret relief for all the happy deer dancing around still alive. Besides, I think the trip is more about hiking around, eating cheese and pretzels and playing cards for a week.

While we were out we also stopped by Benders Potatoes where there are donkeys, ducks, and goats to be petted. We were there to see the bunnies. Anyone who knows me knows I LOVE bunnies. In residence were...Patches, Dusty, Butterscotch, Roger, CuddleBug, Floppsy and Mopsy, Salt and Pepper, and Cottontail. Roger is a huge rabbit with a head as big as mine. I wanted to bring them all home with me. I have already been plotting to sneak my sister's bunny home in the back of Aaron's Jeep.

Today I braved the throngs of shoppers with Aaron and my sister Emily. Normally I enjoy shopping, even for other people *heh*. But today squeezing through the aisles and getting shoved by people clutching their hot pretzels and slurpees left something to be desired. (Nothing against hot pretzels and slurpees) I much preferred browsing through the small shops downtown than trudging through the overcrowded mall. You walk along the sidewalk and duck into each shop, glad to be back in the warmth again. It has a much more festive feel than the mall. Unfortunately ever since the mall opened, one by one, the shops have been disapearing down the main street of my hometown.

Gobble,
Gobble, Quack, Quack, Cluck, Cluck!
So I'm heading home today to Pennsylvania for Thanksgiving. Looking forward
to dinner at my Grandma's. I usually stuff myself silly because I tell myself
it only comes once a year.
I am wondering if next year I can get Grandma to cook up a Turducken!
What's a Turducken?
Well, someone decided they wanted to cut open their dinner and find another
dinner inside. So they stuffed a chicken in a duck, and then stuffed the duck
in a turkey. Very disturbing, yet I am drawn to it.
This guy made a Turducken
and seemed very pleased with the results! Oh, you don't have the 12 to 13 hours
to cook this roast beast? Then order your
premade Turducken!
I say, don't stop there! I think you could squeeze a cornish hen into that
chicken before you stuff it in the duck!

Traveling is a blast. Even the first day home is great. You sleep in your own bed again, you put your toothbrush back in it's little toothbrush holder. But the second day back! Horrors! You find a suitcase crammed with dirty clothes and an inbox full of email.
Joel and I coined a term awhile back. It's "postcardem depression". That's the bum feeling of arriving home from your trip before your postcards do. I've got a heavy case of postcardem depression.

I'm Back!
I had planned on blogging from Comdex.
Unfortunately although I was in a convention center with approximately 50 billion
computers all running at the same time, I couldn't get close enough to one to
blog. Here is a quick rundown of my week in Vegas.
Saturday 11
We flew out of Rochester in the morning, Aaron through Cleveland, Andy and I
through Chicago. Everyone else was either already in Vegas or coming later.
I'm no mathematical genius, but I should have been able to figure out that our
flight was 5 hours long, not 8 due to the 3 hour time difference. Sad, sad,
sad.
Andy and I almost missed our connection in Chicago because we were lured by
the siren call of Cinnabon.
But we all made it to Las Vegas. On our shuttle ride to the Flamingo, where
we were staying (everything is pink), I nearly had a Pokemon
seizure from all the lights. No one in Vegas has to own a flashlight.
Sunday 12
My feet! My feet! Today I started working at the Las Vegas convention center.
I roamed about the convention center taking pictures of dazed attendees so they
could then go to our booth and send picture postcards. Not even my years of
waitressing in college prepared me for the repetitious chanting of "Hi! Can
I take your picture for Faces of Comdex? Blah, blah, blah" over and over. Plus,
I was decked out in a blaze yellow polo shirt with KODAK in huge letters across
the back. Some people actually had to ask me "So who do you work for?" At least
I wasn't in a film canister costume.
At least I learned something today. For all of my 27 years I believed the word
"avocado" to have two "D's".
I entirely thought the fruit? vegetable? was "advocado". That's how I spelled
it. That's how I pronounced it. Until I saw it spelled out on a menu at Dive
with Tina, Tony and Andy. I asked them to confirm the true spelling and now
I think they are in doubt of my intelligence. The shame.
Monday 13
Oh my feet. I am meeting some interesting characters too. Two people took MY
picture. Some wanted their picture taken WITH me. Ugghh. But most people are
friendly, even if they don't want their picture taken. I have met folks from
England, France, Italy, Kuwait, India, New Zealand, Australia and Chili. I think
they came for the free T-shirts.
After long day Aaron and I slid up and down the strip checking out the sites.
Vegas is like a Disney World for grown ups. They are losing money on us because
we aren't gamblers. We went to see the pirate show with sinking ship at Treasure
Island, the volcano at The Mirage
the canals and gondolas at the Venetian,
and the amazing fountains at the
Bellagio (my favorite). Dinner on the set of "Batman" where the batsignal
kept blinding me, at the Warner
Brothers Studio 16 restaurant and I was done for the day.
Tuesday 14
My feet! My feet! I can no longer feel my feet. At least today, we altered one
of my badges to sneak Aaron into the convention. He spent the day cruising the
exhibits snatching up freebies. He acquired quite a collection of T-shirts and
pens. After the convention we were all obliged to go hear our CEO,
Dan Carp give a keynote address. I get choked up every time I hear that "True Colors" song.
I would say the highlight (for Aaron) this evening was eating at the Harley
Davidson Cafe. We hardly even talked. He just gazed about with an awed look
on his face. I did managed to pry him away and we went to see the roller coaster
at New York, New York, the dragon show at Excalibur, the Sphinx at Luxor and
the lions at MGM Grand. And hallelujah, Vegas has Crispy Creme!
Wednesday 15
I have been here so long people think I am a Comdex info guide and ask me for
directions. Sad thing is I DO know how to get to the Handspring exhibit.
Tonight the company took everyone from kodak.com that was at the convention
out to dinner. At first we flinched at the prices but then when we thought about
how much time we were spending on the exhibit floor we went to town. The servers
were like the penguins in Mary Poppins. They didn't bring one dish out at a
time. A whole team of servers came out to deliver all fourteen of our plates
at once. It was plush, and my feet deserved it.
Thursday 16
I was so thrilled this was my last day! I felt badly that everyone else still
had one more day to work back at the booth, but it didn't stop me from dancing
out of there.
Tina and Tony had the afternoon off, so with Aaron, we all went out to
Red Rock Canyon to look around. I liked the rich red color of the sand and
rocks. But I didn't see any wild burros.
Today was Tina's Birthday, so we went out to get Rock Star Outfits to wear
to Baby's
Nightclub at Hard Rock Hotel. I got tight black pants and a shiny shirt.
Tina got sparkly velvet pants and Aaron got vinyl pants *snicker*. We were really
excited to see what Tony would show up in. We were sure he would pull something
spectacular out his sleeve. We would all look fabulous. We would dance the night
away. BUT when we came down from changing into our outfits, there was Ted, Andy
and Tony in plain old chinos and button up shirts. We had to be Rock Stars without
them.
Friday 17
Our last day in Vegas and Aaron and I caught a bus tour to Hoover
Dam. It was huge. It was amazing. And I enjoyed trotting around saying things
like, "Where's our dam tour guide? Is there a dam gift shop?" The highlight
was devouring foot long hot dogs called "Dam Dogs".
We caught a red eye out of town that night. I had gambled $20 in Vegas, came
home with $30.
Viva Las Vegas.

Moon
Land and Low Technology
Today my moon
property documents came in the mail. There was my Lunar Deed, Lunar Map
(I marked the approx. location of my land with the red square) and the Lunar
Constitution. How much fence does it take to mark off 1777.58 acres?
I took the picture of the papers with my brand
new DC20! It was up for grabs in the lunchroom and I snatched it up. When
you take a picture, it sounds like a rubber band is running the works inside
it. It only takes eight 493x373 pictures at 72 dpi. That's some rip tearin'
technology. *snort* Hey it was something in it's time. Now the pictures it takes
are so cruddy they are great.
It reminds me a lot of my Lomo
camera. The Lomo is not cutting edge photography, but it has a great cult following.
It's so bad it's good.

You look at the stats for sites like Loobylu

Someone is reading your site and not because they have to or because you harrass

Springer Therapy
Aaron and I went last night to see Who's
Afraid of Virginia Wolfe?" at the Geva Theater. Not the most happy-go-lucky
of plays. I had vaguely remembered the movie
version with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton not being a "feel
good" movie either. A well executed, thought provoking performance, but
a bummer none the less.
I would say one of the big plusses of seeing this production, is when you walk
out of there you feel pretty good about your life. You think "I don't have
an alcohol problem. I am not in a dysfunctional relationship." You feel
right on track. Kinda like watching Jerry Springer. Sure it's smut TV, but you
feel like an incredibly attractive, emotionally healthy, highly educated genius
compared to those folks. You've got your act together. It's quite therapeutic!

The Real Reason Why I Voted
To get the sticker. Yeah, that's right. It's like Joel says "People will
do anything for a T-shirt". I was in it for the sticker.
Joel got up at the crack of dawn to vote and was strutting around the office
all day with his "I voted today!" sticker plastered to his chest.
I felt excluded. Left out. Stickerless.
So I tore out of work, nabbed Aaron who spent the day at the courthouse getting
his papers straightened out so he could vote in New York and we headed to the
polls.
Check the name, sign the book, into the curtain, flick, flick, flick, step
out of the curtain.
I pause and stare expectantly at the leetle old lady that was "watching"
the booth.
She smiles and nods at me.
"Ummm, do I get a sticker?" I ask motioning to the sticker stuck
to her fuzzy white cardigan.
"Ohhh...we ran out hours ago. Lots of voters."
"Oh." I try to hide my disapointment.
"But take mine!" she insists as she's peeling it off.
"Oh no! That's okay.. really!" I don't want to take the leetle old
lady's sticker!
"No please!" as she sticks it to my parka and *thud, thud*, pounds on it to make it stay.
"Oh, all right."
Mission accomplished.

Election Day
Ahhh. The day we all have been waiting for. Because after today, we won't be
bombarded by venomous campaign commercials and election day news updates for
another few years. I will even be glad to no longer see the "Get out and
vote!" messages as well.
Now don't get me wrong. I think it is important to vote. I think it is our
civic duty. Just look at all the things that have happened because of one vote.
In 1876, one vote gave Rutherford B. Hayes the presidency of the United States
of America.
In 1875, one vote changed France from a monarchy to a republic.
In 1868, one vote saved President Andrew Johnson from impeachment.
In 1845, one vote brought Texas into the Union.
In 1776, one vote gave America the English language instead of German.
In 1649, one vote caused Charles I of England to be executed.
In 1645, one vote gave Oliver Cromwell control of England.
In 1800, one vote elected Thomas Jefferson president.
In 1923, one vote gave Adolph Hilter leadership of the Nazi Party.
That last one is especially scary. So I certainly plan to vote. Mostly so I
can complain about the winner if they aren't the one I voted for. I think if
you don't vote then you are not allowed to complain about the person that wins.
But as for encouraging people to vote, I liked what Andy Rooney had to say
on "Sixty Minutes" Sunday night. He said that if a person has to be
begged and cajoled into going to vote, then they probably aren't bright enough
to be voting. They are not familiar with the issues and their uninformed votes
are canceling out our informed votes. He wrapped it up by saying, "If you
are too dumb to decide to vote on your own, then don't vote. Unfortunately the
people that need to hear this are not smart enough to be watching Sixty Minutes
right now."
Now I don't claim to be any political science major. Sometimes I even have
trouble following "The
West Wing". So I am a little fuzzy on the issues myself. I recommend
this site before heading out
to the polls.

Why is it whenever you take a sick day, as the day goes on you start to feel better and better, thus making you feel like a big baby.
I was quite sickly yesterday. Reason #1 for not blogging yesterday.
So today, instead of going to work and spreading the joy, I stayed at home. By afternoon I was feeling better. And feeling sheepish for not roughing it and going to work. I don't like taking sick days. I didn't miss a single day of Senior High School.
Well at any rate I was able to get up and fix my computer this afternoon. Reason #2 for not blogging yesterday.
Side note: It's amazing how much fluid the human head can produce!

Caught in an affair
Life is certainly going to be more interesting with Aaron here.
I gave him the spare keys to my place so he could use my phone, computer etc
while he is moving in to his place. Last night when I got home from work, I
didn't see any sign of him around. When I opened the door to my apartment, a
strange sight met my eyes. The lights had been dimmed, candles lit and soft
music was playing. And sitting on my couch was a big mylar balloon of one of
the little three eyed aliens from "Toy Story". I love those little
aliens. "The claw... the claw chooses who will go... and who will stay."
I am standing there studying the scene when Aaron opens the apartment door
opens behind me and starts to enter. He freezes. He looks from the alien to
the candles to me. Then he points a finger at the poor balloon and shouts "Oh!
Who is he?! What's he doing here? Sneaking around behind my back are you?!"
All I could do was stand there and sputter.
The funnier thing was Aaron meant to strap him into the passenger side of my
car at work, but little did he know, due to parking lot construction, I was
parked in a totally different lot than usual. He walked around morosely with
the alien balloon for quite some time unsuccessfully searching for my car.
People must have thought they couldn't remember where they parked their spaceship.

Shopping Sighting #3: When Kristen and I were
in London , we went to the niftiest little store called Muji.
I nearly went wild. I left the store with a bag as big as me. (I am not kidding)
They describe their merchandise as "objects for living". I call them,
"things to put things in". And oh how I love "things to put things
in". They also have cool pens, pencils, notebooks... just lots of stuff
you really need. Everything is very plain. Wood, clear acrylic, brushed aluminum,
canvas.
So I am not pointing out just one particular object in this shopping sighting.
The whole store is wonderful. Unfortunately, the stores are only in Japan, the
United Kingdom and France. But Halleluiah, there's an online
store! And it just went live with it's holiday update today!
