Coincidence

This evening Chuck, Tina, Aaron and I were at Park 54 celebrating Aaron's birthday when we started talking about how Jerry Seinfeld once ate there. Then we discussed Cher visiting Wegmans when she was in town. Aaron suddenly piped up and asked if we had ever seen Cher's movie about a kid with a big head. Tina asked... "You mean "Mask"? With Eric Stoltz?" Aaron didn't know who Eric Stoltz was so we spent the next ten minutes coming up with movies Eric Stoltz has been in. Aaron still had no idea who he was.

Back at the homestead I looked Eric Stoltz up to show Aaron and it turns out... today is HIS birthday too! Weird!!!

At the grocery store, if you buy six small boxes of Jell-O Gelatin you get a free creepy jigglers jell-o mold. I got mine! Made grape jigglers yesterday.

They may have tasted a bit buttery though since we used butter flavored cooking spray on the mold. Heh.

The Jell-O site also has a cool idea for making jiggler hands with disposable gloves. Ewww.

Our first true fall activity. Today we went out to an apple farm to pick apples. We rode a wagon out to the rows of trees followed by a vicious apple dog. I think I ate my weight in apples while we were out there. I see pies and applesauce in the near future.

At any given time, on various days, I can be found out in my garden... staring at my eggplants.

Willing them to turn purple. Watching for the slightest tint of lavender... just a shade of lilac.

But no.

Aaron and I were sitting at the sushi bar for dinner when I noticed a teenage girl had folded her chopstick paper into a little chopstick rest. How had I never seen this before? I spent the rest of the meal trying to copy it, but couldn't get it right.

I was hoping she would leave so I could grab it and dissect it. They ordered more drinks, we ordered more drinks. They got dessert, we got dessert. They would not leave! By the time I polished off my last spoonful of green tea ice cream, I had finally figured it out. I found a dragon pattern for a chopstick paper holder online... must practice... will be prepared next time.

Oh and did you know it's impolite to rub your chopsticks together to get the splinters off? How nice... I have been sawing away with those things for years. I have broken most of the etiquette rules on this page! My mom never told me these things!

This morning I noticed my retired neighbor out in her yard watching her dogs go potty. She was shuffling around in a bathrobe with curlers in her hair, a cup of coffee in her hand and a cigarette hanging out of her mouth. She looked... familiar. Then I realized.

My neighbor looks like Maxine! You know that cranky woman on cards and mugs at Hallmark! My neighbor IS Maxine. Although my neighbor is quite sweet and not cranky at all. and she doesn't have those huge sunglasses.

howdotheselook?*gasp*

I nearly bought a pair of pants that were size zero, just because I was able to zip them up. I'm not saying they looked good... oh no. They certainly didn't feel good. That wasn't the point. They were z-e-r-o-s. Aaron talked me out of it, because I could barely walk, much less consider sitting down.

Why must we play the size game? I've heard of projects that would help standardize sizes. It would fix the problem of a size 8 at H & M being a size 4 at Banana Republic. Couldn't womens sizes go by inches like men's clothing, or is that too scary? Mmm yeah, I guess I don't want my waist size printed inside my jeans.

Mind you I am normally not even at that end of the number scale. No, no, no. The thought of me being a size zero is laughable. Clearly there was some vanity sizing going on. Guess what? It works.

Brown is the new black

My prediction for the "in" colors this fall? Pink and brown. What do I have to go on? Nothing really. Ok, so I saw a decent amount of pink and brown combos in Toronto (ex: Guess hooded sweatshirt), but mostly I am just being hopeful. I really like those colors together.

Note: my word for the week is "decent"... while shopping... "This price is decent." while at restaurant... "It's a decent amount of chicken." I can't stop.

I was so pleased with myself. Planting rhubarb for Aaron... his favorite vegetable, fruit... whatever it is. Except when he came home and took a look at the garden he said "That's not rhubarb."

Of course it is, don't be silly, I tell him. It said so on the package. Turns out the package LIED. Rather it was BLATENTLY MISLEADING. The mystery vegetable in my garden is Swiss Chard. Rhubarb Swiss Chard. I thought Swiss Chard was a type of Rhubarb, but I suppose Rhubarb is actually an evil strain of Swiss Chard. At any rate it is not the stuff he likes and does anyone have a recipe for Swiss Chard?

Today was Oscar's first birthday! We went over to Chuck and Tina's so Oscar and Grizzy could open presents and eat cake. I ordered a peanut butter cake from Three Dog Bakery. Oscar even blew out his own candle. Well, more like he snorted it out. Tina and Chuck got him a hilarious pumpkin hat. We'll be scaring the trick or treaters with that.

More pictures on Ofoto.

Oh and it was Chuck's birthday too! Happy Birthday Chuck!

We went to see Guster at the U of R last night. Abby got us into the sound check, which was somewhat interesting... mostly a lot of listening to guitars being strummed for just a few chords... microphones turning off and on.

There was a meet and greet afterwards and the Gusters were quite interested in our camera phones. I got mine out to take a picture of Brian and Aaron, because we have joked about how they look alike... but now looking at the picture they don't look alike at all. Maybe from a distance. Squinting. At night.

We took a picture of ourselves outside later and sent it to the Guster email address. They will probably receive it and wonder why on earth we sent them a picture of ourselves.

In preparation for his birthday weekend, Oscar had a bath tonight.

He didn't mind, although he looks completely pathetic in the pictures. He had a good time rolling around on a towel to dry off. He smells squeaky clean now!

Stuck

This cucumber tried to make a break for it. He tried to sneak out of my garden, but he fell asleep on his way out of the fence and when he woke up he had grown too big. The cucumber is now wedged between the wire of the fence and I'm gonna have to cut him out of there.

I picked up the handiest thing at Wegmans. It's a takeout menu restaurant organizer! How did I get by without it? No more... "Where is the China Wok menu?! I'M HUNGRY!!! WHERE IS IT?!!!" Now I just calmly and confidently turn to the Chinese Food pocket and quickly and easily pull out the much needed menu.

Everything is going to be OK!

What do you get when you cross the cutest creature on earth with my handbag addiction?

A big problem.

Cindy emailed me a link to these adorable pug purses.

I really love the one that actually looks like a little pug. But I wonder if Oscar would get nervous... start wondering when the day would come that I made him into a handbag too.

This year my tomatoes did really well. They were as big as my head! Well ok, more like the size of my hand. They would be killer in the world's largest tomato fight.

The big ones aren't very pretty. More like giant ugly mutated tomatoes. The one on the right though was my prize and joy. A lovely shade of red... perfect shape. Too bad soon I will destoy them... to make salsa.

Back from the last weekend of the film festival. We saw The Cooler (pretty good), The Brown Bunny (shocking) and The Undead (very funny "splatstick"). Turns out we closed down the festival... The Undead was the last movie of the festival and the last movie to be show at the Uptown which is scheduled to be demolished soon. I think I am all set in the movie viewing department for awhile.

Errr, turns out our makeover was actually at the Stila counter. I find Bloom and Stila to be rather similiar. We forgot to take pictures of before/after. I can say that we both looked quite nice, but the makeup felt heavy and cakey. Neither of us wear foundation or mascara, so it was a bit of a change.

Step Two: Insert Foot

While in Toronto we wandered into a L'Occitane to look at the soaps and whatnot. I happened upon an pile of oddly shaped glycerine soap (see illustration). Was it a shrimp? An alien? Not sure what it was supposed to be, I proceeded to call out to the others... "What IS this?!" and then held it in the air pretending it was making little squeaking sounds... "meep meep meep!".

The Soap Girl siddled on up to me and said "Actually, that was designed by a blind person. It's a teddy bear. All sales proceeds go to the foundation for the blind."

*silence*

"Charming! I'll take a dozen!"

How could I forget? The best bit of monogramming going on this weekend was the new Links of London charm Aaron got me at Holt Renfrew for my charm bracelet. A nice shiny J to go with the heart the bracelet came with!

The bracelet had to have a sleepover to have the J added, so we pick it up next weekend. Maybe I should have an E - N - N -Y to go with it... in case I ever forget how to spell my name.

The new hot thing is monogrammed handbags. At a little store called Ice they said that Halle Berry bought one for each of her friends.

We found them at Roots and I got a brown clutch with a pink "J" on it. When I was a kid, I LOVED stuff with my name or initials on. If it didn't have a "Jenny" on it, I stuck a "Property of Jenny" sticker on it. Some things never change. Oh, and I said I wasn't buying any more shoes for awhile... I didn't say anything about handbags.

I snapped these pictures with my camera phone at Holt Renfrew. They had diplays that had films as the theme and I really liked the snapshots sandwiched between two sheets of hanging plexiglass. That's Aaron standing behind it.

Today's movie was another film by an actor- turned- director... Sofia Coppola. "Lost in Translation" had some cool shots of Tokyo. A dazed Bill Murray surrounded by chattering Japanese... instantly funny.

While in Toronto for the Film Festival we are staying at the new boutique Hotel Le Germaine. It's so nice! Everything is so well designed. Well, except for the clear glass between the shower and the bedroom. Thank goodness for blinds. I may be spoiled for Holiday Inns forever. Even with their towel amnesty day.

The first movie we saw started off promisingly. "I Love Your Work" had a lot of funny parts at the begining but quickly spiraled down to dark and de... press... ing. Two hours of my life I am not getting back. I thought it would be much lighter considering it was directed by Adam Goldberg. I was also very interested in the production blog, but it has been taken down. Last graphic above is a scene from the movie. It looks like Christina Ricci is reflected in the mirror, but I don't remember that in the movie. Freaky. More on the celebrities we spotted from Tina.

We have been looking forward to this all summer.

This weekend we are heading to Toronto for the Film Festival.

Here's to hoping we bump into Colin Firth.

Not to mention shopping at Holt Renfrew and eating at Movenpick.

I have been looking for super duper pointy shoes to go with my extra wide leg black pants for a long time. After reading Absolutely Vile's post about Issac Mizrahi at Target, I wandered on over to the web site for a look see. There they were, the perfect super duper pointy shoes for only $22!!!

I stopped at Target after work and nabbed them. These are definitely the last pair for a very long time. No really.

I think I have the Back to School Blues. No, I am not going back to school this fall, but I am having close proximity pains. Normally, I love fall. It's my favorite season. For some reason, this year, I didn't get enough summer. Not enough swimming or barbeques or popsicles.

It feels as though the weather went from 80's to 60's in a day. It's that feeling that you have to straighten up and get serious, no more goofing around. Hit the books and put away your flip flops. I feel like a deprived third grader.

My dad told me to stop at the new PA welcome center at Tioga County on our way home. (He neglected to mention you can only get there from the southbound lane of Route 15.) But I was determined to stop. He made it sound like it was the Taj Mahal of welcome centers.

So we stopped. We got coffee. We took pictures. It was pretty nice as far as welcome centers go. Yes, all the pictures from my Labor Day weekend were courtesty of the new camera phone.
