I'm tempted to try potatoes for the first time, too. My friend grows hers in a cardboard box and uses an old potato as the 'starter' - just cut it into chunks so that each chunk has at least one 'eye' in it, then toss it in the dirt.

I just need to figure out how to keep the pests away. We get all kinds of snails and birds and rabbits in our small yard (which is actually just a bricked-in patio, over-run by mint!).

We grew potatoes in tires this year, but we live in a rent house and we don't have a raised garden. My step dad does, on the other hand. Well, he has 7 small raised gardens. He planted nothing but potatoes in one of them and about a month after harvest, they still have 10-15 pounds to eat!

If you are growing red potatoes, I recommend cutting them into little cubes and deep frying them. They taste like butter!

You will love these Potato Bins. I had the same idea last year. I wanted to grow Potatos but all I ever heard was how they were hard to control, meaning you find Potatos all over your garden. I got two of these, bought some organic seed potatos and put them in. My instructions said to put in a 4 inch layer of dirt, put the seed potatos in and just cover with dirt. As the shoot grows keep adding dirt. That is what we did and in the fall the potatos were so good. I was amazed. We didn't plant any this year because of us going out west for 2 1/2 weeks.
