HoneyCrisp apples are finally ready for picking and Aaron's birthday is this week so I planned an Apple Picking/Aaron Bday party.

I even made buttons as party favors.

We are all big fans of HoneyCrsip apples.

Even the littlest one.

I think apple picking is one of the best fall activities.

Instead of a birthday cake I made Aaron a birthday apple crisp.

Long time readers may know that I am a big fan of the HoneyCrisp apple. It's amazing how much you can love an apple variety but there you have it. So I was pretty excited to hear about the new SweeTango apple. The SweeTango was developed at the University of Minnesota, the same as the HoneyCrisp. The SweeTango is in fact a cross betwen the HoneyCrisp and Zestar! I didn't add the ! to Zestar! on purpose. The ! is part of the Zestar! name.

Anyhoo, we are lucky enough to have a local orchard growing SweeTangos and we got a few of them. Oh yahh... they are tasty! My only complaint is the ones we got are so darn big! About half way through one of these bad boys I have to take a break. Not a bad problem to have really.

Apple picking season is here.

"Hmmm but I haven't any teeth..."

Sometimes I like to pick these teeny ones for snacks.

We were hoping for Honeycrisp but they aren't picking them yet... what's going on here? Look the other way! Ha ha.

I managed to squeeze in an apple picking expedition for some precious Honey Crisps before I left for the airport. I ate two while picking.

It was so hot in Beijing I was unprepared for the cooler weather that has arrived in Rochester. Paired with the arrival of Labor Day I suddenly feel as though fall is being foisted upon me. Rather than feeling sad summer is over I am trying to embrace all the things I love about fall. Like apples.

Which I made into apple pies I made last year.

and applesauce too.

I am stalking the orchard websites for my favorite Honeycrisp picking times. I am also interested in the apple variety that the local orchard is preparing for 2009... Chestnut Crab - Small and sometimes quite russetted and ugly, this cute little crab packs great flavor and surprising juiciness. Sliced with cheese it's quite wonderful. More than just a gnome-like novelty, Chestnut is a cult favorite in Minnesota, where it was introduced in 1949.

Intriguing!

sign

What a great idea!

cider

I had to try a Cider Slushie of course. It was delicious! This was the closest recipe I could find online. I may have to experiment with this one myself.

applesauce

We made applesauce this weekend. We used our usual recipe... but this time we used a stick blender to mash up the apples. Very satisfying.

I put some of it in little jars, just the right size for taking in my lunch!

domo

I got Aaron a Domo-kun for his birthday and Domo goes places with us now. Like apple picking.

domo

Domo likes apple crisp with ice cream. See more pictures of Domo at the apple farm on Aaron's gallery.
