We were supposed to get a lot of snow today so Aaron picked me up from work. We were driving along and almost home when I spied with my little eye something very curious. I yelled "Turn around and park!" I really did shout that and Aaron frantically pulled over as soon as he could. He wasn't even out of the truck and I was halfway down the sidewalk.
What I spotted was this. The warm glow of a brank spanky new bakery! I just love to see new businesses open downtown and I was thrilled that it was a bakery.
I rushed in and started taking pictures in between "I'll have some of these!" and "I'll take one of those!" Check out the goods! MINI CUPCAKES PEOPLE!!!
And single servings of WEDDING CAKE!!! BRILLIANT!!!
This is Nick and Bethany Soures, the owners.... who were very nice and accepting of my bizarre estatic behavior and even let me take a picture of them.
So the name of the new bakery is Goodness Cakes and by new I mean it opened a week ago! It's at 720 University Avenue, in what I think used to be the old police station (now houses a photo gallery too). Edibles and Starry Nite cafe are just a few doors down.
If you happen to stop by be sure to tell them the short crazy girl in the orange coat sent you.
I am no fan of Microsoft, but I am a fan of bunnies, cupcakes, pink stuff and Amy Sedaris. I was poking around Facebook when I hit this Microsoft ad with Amy Sedaris running Dusty Food Cupcakes with rabbits making cupcakes. I about passed out.
Bunnies with Chef hats are making cupcakes on a conveyer belt.
The bakery is pink with pastel colored decor. So cute. I was drooling over her vintage spice jars and mint green phone.
Clover the bunny shows Amy how to use Microsoft to organize her small business that is in disarray. At the end she goes skipping off to a rabbit convention in a bright pink dress. Wonderful! You can watch the video here.
Last month... before I went to Cleveland I put a call out for cupcake bakeries that I could check out. A couple folks emailed/commented that there weren't any there.
To the contrary, at the West Side Market I found Grandma Freda's cupcakes. There were strawberry, wedding cake vanilla, peanut butter cup and deep chocolate almond.
They were goooood. Lucky Clevelanders. Hopefully I will get a chance to see what cupcakes Las Vegasers enjoy. Or is it Las Vegasians?
Remember the silly feet silicone cupcake cups I posted about awhile ago? Now they have
witch feet for Halloween! I saw monster feet at Target too, but I can't find them online.
And because Christmas now overlaps with Halloween, here are Santa feet too!
Since I was only in Boston for the weekend, most of the time was spent in the city. I will need a separate trip to explore all the great recommendations in the South End, Cambridge and Brookline.
I did make the most of the North End and one of the first places I hit was Lulu's Bake Shoppe .
The cupcakes pictured are red velvet, chocolate, smores and peanut butter. The vanilla with pink frosting didn't make it to the photo shoot intact.
I also checked out Johnny Cupcakes on Newbury Street, who, surprise, surprise... doesn't actually have cupcakes! That's okay... what I really wanted was a t-shirt.
I got into Boston last night and already I have had lobster and the
yummiest clam chowder at the Union Oyster House
and an ice cream injected cupcake at Trani. Thank you
to everyone who has left me recommendations! You are the best! I can
tell this is going to be an awesome weekend.
We are in the North End and I love it. There is a cute
cobblestone street with pubs and cafes around every corner. Couldn't be
cuter or more charming. Heading out now to explore...
I just ordered this t-shirt from Threadless.
It's called "skip dessert"... bah-hah! If you aren't familiar with
Threadless, it's really cool. [Users (professional illustrators and
amateurs alike) may submit t-shirt designs online, which are then put
to a public vote. A small percentage of submissions are selected to be
printed and sold through the online store. Creators of the winning
designs receive a combined cash and store credit prize.]- wikipedia
How cool is this? A dish
scrubber that you can blow bubbles with. I saw this and the
cupcake shirt on my new favorite site... Sugar.
My friend Joel sent me the link to these cool Apple stickers.
They are like window clings that you can put over the glowing apple
logo on your Mac. I like the fish bowl one.
Side note: found these on the yumsugar
site which then let me to all the other sugar sites... I am now
registered as ljc_sugar
and I am quite addicted to the site.
While I was in Atlanta for work, Tina was in NYC for work. She
brought me back mini-cupcakes from Eleni's
and a Tokidoki
milk figure. The cupcake looks huge in the photo but it was actually
only two inches tall. WAS.
All I brought back for her was a t-shirt. It's a very cool t-shirt
though! More on that later...
We have been working hard here in Atlanta and I don't think we
are going to get a chance to go anywhere before we leave tomorrow. I am
crushed because I found two cupcake joints in the city.
Our mall got a Forever 21, but I had never gone in it. Then I read this article in the NY Times and was more interested. Tina and I stopped in and I found a cupcake tank top I went crazy for. After Aprille got me a cupcake t-shirt for my birthday I want cupcake everything.
I can smell a cupcake a mile away. Ok, well maybe not exactly, but I did spot a sign for Teacake Bake Shop across from our hotel. After work today we walked over and bought some cupcakes and cookies. They were delicious and I loved the pink box they came in. Dangerous thing, how close they are to the hotel.
This evening I discovered Starbucks has cupcakes again. I was really happy because I was getting tired of marshallow cripsy treats every Sit & Knit night. I like the special cupcake carrying boxes. They also have super cute cupcake stickers... they gave me a couple extra. It was a good cupcake day!
There are genius' working at Baker Street Bakery. What you are looking at here are a boston creme cupcake and a peanut butter cup cupcake. The tops are sliced off, the inside filled with goodness, tops popped back on with more cream and chocolate coating.
I have been thoroughly enjoying my birthday gifts this week. My friend Kelly sent me a cupcake recipe book that has me thinking about cupcakes 24/7 and a box of chocolate covered, candy coated sunflower seeds. I had never had them before and now I don't think I can live without them. I am panicked about the day I eat the last one.. where do I get more?!
I was filling the awesome pink peppermill that Tina got me when I noticed where it was made. I love stuff like that.
The shower was a success. The table of Lauren heads were a little eerie but the jungle animal cupcakes Sarah and Lisa made were a huge hit. Especially amongst the little squirts... if the frosting covered faces are anything to go by. Tina toted home all sorts of goodies for wee Lauren. A good time was had by all.
Starbucks has cupcakes now! They aren't the greatest cupcakes ever, but what I love is the special box they come in that transports the cupcake without damaging it.
The funny thing about this is that the first time I brought one home from Sit&Knit, I left the cupcake box sitting in my knitting carrying case when I came home. I was in the dining room when I heard a snuffing noise. When I went to the living room, Oscar was half in, half hanging out of my knitting case. He had managed to open the box and eat the cupcake, paper and all. He was licking out the last of the frosting when I caught him.
The cry I let out made Aaron think I had chopped off a finger. Oscar checks my knitting everytime I come home, hoping there is a cupcake in there for him.
This evening I had my annual Oscar's Party. I like to try and have food that synchs up with the movies up for nominations. This year I had Charlie and the Chocolate Cupcakes, Wallace and Gromit and the Welsh Rarebit, Memoirs of a Geisha Sushi and Brokeback Mountain Dew. Aprille brought Constant Gardener Garden Herb Bread and Holly brought Turkish Delight. I have been dying to try Turkish Delight since I saw Chronicles of Narnia. It was good... not sell off your brothers and sister good, but good. More pics at my gallery.
I really wanted a certain kind of sprinkles for my Holiday Party cupcakes, not crystalized suger. After scouring the cake aisle in several stores, I actually found these in the bulk bins at Wegmans... Wegmans comes through again. They are called holly berry sprinkles... too cute and perfect for my new cupcake stand.
Well, it was only a matter of time. I couldn't stand it anymore. I have been gazing at the Wilton cupcake stands for awhile now. A holiday party on Saturday provided the perfect excuse and with a 40% off coupon in hand I headed off to Joann's to acquire it.
It holds 24 cupcakes. I resisted getting the 38 cupcake model. I couldn't even wait for the cupcakes to cool to load it up... ow, ow.
I just read about a record store in NYC called Cake Shop that not only sells music but also serves up cupcakes and cookies.
That is brilliant. I think cupcakes and cookies improves any experience ten fold.
I went to the website hoping to see what their cupcake offering was... even poured through their picture gallery and only came up with a picture of a bar with an empty cake stand.
If you love cupcakes and are on the west coast you gotta check out Sprinkles Cupcakes in LA. They offer special flavors daily... like banana, carrot, chai latte and pumpkin. As for sprinkles, they have the cutest selection for on top... stuff like bunnies and dragonflys.
And, hold onto your hat, if you are a frosting junky like Tina and I , you can get a frosting shot! For 75¢!
Oscar can get his fix too with a mini dog cupcake. Yum diddley yum.
I was at Tina's house and her niece and I decorated cupcakes. Some of them were wee little cupcakes... sort of like the ones NotMartha has been making.
In the style of the infamous frog cupcakes, Wegmans is making pumpkin cupcakes
for the Halloween season. Aaron brought me one home the other night.
They don't quite have the wide eyed wonderment expression that the frogs did,
but you have to appreciate their goofy unknowing smile. Such innocence... such
sweetness... such yumminess in my tummy.
I liked looking at the 3 year old blog page that I posted yesterday.
I was cracking myself up at some of the stuff I wrote. So much has changed...
yet some things were quite the same. Today I actually wore the same St. Patricks
Day t-shirt seen there. And once again, we went to Wegmans and got Lucky Frog
Cupcakes. They still met a horrible demise.
This was another tiny shop that we managed to squeeze ourselves into, the Magnolia
Bakery. It was sort of like the soup nazi. You get corraled in through the
door, over to trays of pastel colored cupcakes and then over to the register
to pay.
Tina clung to one of the two tables as I seized our sugary treats. I thought
the cupcakes were wonderful and am thinking about getting their cookbook in
an effort to replicate the little suckers.
Aaron bought St. Patrick's Day cupcakes at Wegmans. They were called Lucky
Frog cupcakes. Chocolate or vanilla cake with a glom of pink icing on top then coated with
green icing and little eyes.
I thought they were hysterical looking. (Joel thinks they look disgusting)
