We got our first strawberry from our new strawberry plants. Well, it's the first one we found before Oscar got a chance to pluck it off the vine. The plants have a little fence around them now to keep the strawberry thief away.
We are going to the beach for a week, so I got these plant nannies to water my window boxes while we are gone. I put so much work into these plants only to leave them to the elements soon after. This year they shouldn't get thirsty. I like how they use old soda and water bottles.
I will be off the grid and blogging and twittering only by phone.
The biggest thing we accomplished Memorial Day weekend was planting our garden. It doesn't look like it bu there are veggies nestled in there. We also planted our window boxes and other flowers.
Aaron also installed a fancy shmancy irrigation system with automatic timer for when we go on vacation. It drips instead of spraying which is much more green as the water does not evaporate into the air. I need to get off my duff and order a rain barrel to hook it up to.
Here is my new old school watering system. I love this watering can! It looks so nice and it works really well.
I am loving my new "watering can". A Twist and spout garden spout. It's actually just a spout I can screw onto used soda bottles.
(I guess this is my Earth Day post... seeing as how I almost missed the fact it was Earth Day because my stupid Domo calendar made it look like it was last week. Next monday is the 26th again by the way. It worked out though... since it's kinda green to reuse a soda bottle instead of throwing it out.)
We just harvested the last of our garden for the year. The final crop
was our butternut and acorn squash.
I have pictures of this year's garden on My
Gallery.
Aaron made yummy butternut squash soup, but I forgot to take a picture
of it so all I have is a picture of the soup tureens we ate it out of. This
recipe is really good, esp if you put a dollop (or two) of
creme fraiche on top.
I also moved all my herbs inside and now my dining room smells like
sage and rosemary. Yum.
I have pictures of some of this year's flowers on My
Gallery too.
Garden update. We are swimming in tomatoes. Our heirloom Cherokee
Chocolates (left) and New Zealand Pink Pears (right) are ripening like
crazy. The zukes are pretty much over and there are some straggler
cukes. There are several acorn and butternut squash moving right along.
I think the real beauties of the garden this year are the striped
eggplant.
We have been getting a lot done outside lately. Working
outside involves a lot of carrying piles of dirt, weeds and plants from
one place to the next. I am currently drooling over these Tubtrugs I saw on NotMartha
and Da*xiang.
I love the different sizes, the colors and the flexibilty. The
website says they are frost and UV proof, superstrong yet flexible. I
can think of a hundred things we could have used one for... building
our patio, planting our front garden, cleaning out the garage...
We have harvested the first of the veggies from our garden. Three
cucumbers and a zucchini. We made a cucumber, onion and tomato salad
and Lucky
Olive's zucchini recipe.
Check
out this strawberry I got at Wegmans. Monster strawberry.
I was thinking about what to plant in the garden this year, when I realized I never posted last year's results. I have a few pictures of our little raised garden growing and what we harvested, on my Projects Gallery.
It seems the ideal is to buy local organic. We usually supplement our backyard harvest with public market produce, but this summer in addition, Aaron and I have decided to join a CSA co-op farm. For a reasonably priced half share (enough food for two adults) we will get a bag of food each week plus U pick berries, flowers and the option to purchase eggs, pork (fresh bacon!), beef, turkey and even grains. All organic. If we work three to four days in the summer the cost is even less. Aaron is super excited about going to work on the farm even though I had to remind him they are not going to let him drive the tractor.
