Finally! This year I remembered!

Every spring, huge purple baseball sized flowers sprout in front of my neighbor's yards and I realize... I forgot to plant alliums the previous fall.

I love these flowers... it takes every ounce of my energy not to squeeze them. But when I see them blooming in the spring, it is too late to have some of my own. This fall I remembered and bought some bulbs and Aaron and I planted them.

Now I wait.

I have always been interested in forcing bulbs... I wonder if you can do it with these?

  1. I just bought those same ones from Dutch Gardens! (Then I found the same ones at K-Mart much cheaper!) Although I haven't planted them yet, I am so very excited to plant my alliums for the spring. I will be planting them in our massive green planters and in the hopes they'll have a topiary-like effect for the front of our house. I also purchased the Grecian Wildflower mix...100 bulbs for a whopping $11.24! The only thing I hate about planting fall bulbs is that we have to wait until spring to enjoy them!

  2. Ooh, I love the giant alliums! We have a bunch of small ones (gof ball sized) that I really want to move to a better spot in our yard. But having no clue about gardening, I have no idea how well this will work. Worth a shot though. Good luck with yours!

  4. watch out -- the dang chipmunks might be watching where you plant them -- then you'll not see the bulbousness next year.

  5. Of course, when they're your own you can squeeze them all you want! :-)

  6. I love alliums! They're part of the onion family (if you let onions or garlic flower, they look similar). Best part is that the deer won't eat them!!!

  7. I did the exact same thing this year, with alliums and crocuses. Been meaning to do that forever.

  8. I read your blog everyday and I've been wanting to post comments along the way. Alliums are my favorite. I have them all other my yard. Last fall I planted 600 tulip bulbs in the front yard, all along the street. This year I planted 50+ globemaster alium bulbs behind the tulips. I also planted 50 smaller allium bulbs around our cherry tree. I cannot wait to see them all. Good luck!
