Sometimes our cable channels will run commercials for Sonic Burger... of which there are none anywhere near us. At least the online locator says there are none within 150 miles of Rochester. Aaron calls it a waste of marketing dollars. I call it torture.

Now I am starting to see commercials for The Melting Pot. There aren't even any in NY state! I do see there is one coming soon to Buffalo... but that is just too far for me to have to watch commercials of hot cheese and chocolate on a daily basis.

  1. I love Sonic. They have a really vast variety of drinks to pick from. I love their vanilla coke. But their cheeseburgers and tater tots are awesome. And for it being a drive-in, its really neat. I love eating in the car. lol

As far as the melting pot, we have one of those too (here in SC) and people say its really good. I've never been there though.

  2. That's funny. We have a melting pot here in the Twin Cities, but I've never seen a commerical for them, ever.

  3. Come see me in The Big Town (Boise, ID) and I'll take you to BOTH Sonic AND the Melting Pot. Then I'll do ya one better and take you to the Mona Lisa, which is LIKE the MP, but BETTER. :) We may not have MUCH in Idaho, but we do have a couple of nice (& tasty) things!

  4. I'm sorry that you are being tortured by the Sonic ads. They are funny thought, aren't they? "it's so gravy!".

We get tortured with Ruby Tuesday ads here.

  5. Oh don't feel too bad... Sonic isn't that great. It is nice to have for a change but when it comes to fast food, I'm still a Wendy's girl.

  6. Not to get your hopes up, but this has happened with several stores in my area. We always end up GETTING one of those stores within the year. Kohls, Sonic, and some others. We never had them and then started seeing commercials. It was because they planned to open here and were generating interest!

  7. That's how I feel about Ikea!
Sonic is good, but not spectacular (yummy cherry limeade though!)
The Melting pot is absolutely wonderful, though it can be expensive. We only go once and a great while, but when we do, we splurge and get the surf and turf feast with cheese course, filet mignon, lobster, and chocolate dessert. You should definitely try it if you're ever visiting someplace that has one.

  8. Yeah, I can feel your pain. I saw a really good looking sandwich on a commercial yesterday, but I was saddened to find out it was for a Red Robin restaurant. We don't have any of those here. :-(

  9. Jenny,
We see the Sonic commercials here in MN, but do not have one in the state, BUT we DO have a Melting Pot (Thank Goodness!). If you can ever make your way to Buffalo it would be worth it because The Melting Pot is a 2-4 hour experience. The first course is cheese fondue served with veggies and bread; second course is salad; third is a smorghasboard of meats with just as many dipping sauces, and the "piece de resistance" is the fourth course - CHOCOLATE FONDUE! Whooohooo . . . It'll be worth it, I promise! :-)

  10. I'd happily trade you BOTH the Sonics in my town for a Wegman's, or a Trader Joe's, or even a "real" bakery within driving distance of me.

I dunno...you pine for Sonic, but I long for some of the businesses you write about having in Rochester.

  11. Id also love a Wegman's or Trader Joe's; I've heard awesome things about both. Atleast there was a Whole Foods recently built nearby.

We have the same problem here in RI though. Constant commercials (they're so funny) for Sonic, and now Cici's Pizza. Its absolute torture. But we have atleast 4 or 5 duplicate resturants/stores within a 1/2 mile of eachother!

Now after reading all these posts I can't wait for a Melting Pot, it sounds like a fun night out!

  12. I live near a Sonic and a Melting Pot (Sacramento, CA) and I have never seen a commercial for either.
Sonic has some fun extras but it's typical fast food. Melting pot was great but it was 200.00 for two people. So it's better to go with a big group. It is tasty though.

  13. I don't watch commercials, period. I have TIVO!

  14. The next time you're in Southern California, they have a Melting Pot in Irvine (Orange County). That's the only one I know of and it's sooooo yummy! Kind of pricy, but worth the experience. It's perfect for group dinners. The last time I was there I got engaged! =) My now husband and I ordered the 3 course dinner (that can feed 4!) and it was soooo good! He proposed to me right before dessert came out, so I really didn't get to try most of it because I was way too excited (and shocked). I think it was all part of his plan so he could have the chocolate covered fruit for himself! haha =D

  15. Though I love Sonic, I *HATE* their commercials. They really really bug me. We have had sonics for a while, but just recently, there's been somewhat of a Sonic explosion. I know of 6 currently under construction in the areas of the city that I frequent. They're popping up like Walgreens!

I just recently saw a Melting Pot commercial and it reminded me how much I love that place ... I am telling Matt to take me there for our anniversary ... or my b'day. Hopefully Rochester will be next.

  16. Reading your post reminded me that I saw a Melting Pot commercial this weekend and so I checked the website online and found out they just opened one here in Jacksonville, FL! YAY! And don't worry, you're not missing much with Sonic. And for the record, I would trade Melting Pot and Sonic any day for a Trader Joes!

  17. heh. come to denver. both of those restaurants are within 3 miles of my house. we can go for fondue and have a cherry limeade afterwards, for good measure.

but then, i don't have wegman's or trader joe's, so... maybe it's an even trade.

  18. mmmm... Sonic. I have had one since I was a little girl, and my favorite has always been same. Sonic Burger with Mustard and Cheese, tots and Cherry Slushie. When I was little, the local Sonic used to put little plastic animals in the slushies. They would hook them on the cup with the tails. A fond memory, but not a very healthy one.
I try not to eat that stuff anymore....
    Sigh

  19. I feel you're pain. I'm in NYC and the only time I've had Sonic was when I was down at the Outer Banks. We went back 3 times in a week for the cherry limeade.

I just saw the melting pot commercial for the first time the other day and it got me all excited. So mean.

  20. My husdand feels the same way about Sonic. Politics/environmental delays have our Sonic postponed indefinitely, although the commericals still run. We have reservations at the Melting Pot this Sat night. I hear its really expensive but the choclate is to die for. We're avid at-home fondue-ers.

  21. We have a Sonic in our little corner of PA - next time you're heading through PA you should try to find one.

  22. In Columbus, Sonic tortured us for YEARS with their commercials. They teased us with promises of drink varieties and coney dogs. Then, one day, they opened one in town, and we made an evening of it like it was 5-star restaurant. Best food ever? Well, no...but I like that if I see something on tv, I can actually go get it without driving a hundred miles.

  23. I live in the Dallas area, and there are Sonics all over the place (2 in my college town alone). The drinks are okay, but the food... no, it wouldn't be worth a trip from Rochester or anything.

There's a Melting Pot within 20 minutes, but i've never been. None of my friends think it would be fun to eat melted cheese. :(

And I agree with whoever said "we get tortured with Ruby Tuesday ads." Curse them for always showing those gorgeous burgers. The nearest Ruby Tuesday is over an hour away. (Although, I went to Maine recently, and was shocked because they were everywhere.)

There are Tim Hortons and Rite-Aids in Maine, but not the south, either.

And I've never seen a wegmans in the whole state of texas.

Thus, I am convinced that some chains are mostly northern and some are mostly southern.

  24. the melting pot is very $$ so chances are you won't be going that often... that's why it's good to go in a group . that way you can try out more than one dish (especially regarding the chocolate dessert fondues) and get it out of your system. i actually prefer the non-chain fondue restaurant in edgewater called the magic pot which is set up a bit better.

regarding sonic, they also tease us in nj with them. at least you have tim horton's by you (the donuts might not be as good as dunkin's but the soups are great!), i think they start in the upstate ny/ct area. we used to have one krispykreme in nj (went to the opening) but they close that and others in pa because they were cooking the books. at least i can get some at the supermarket or Penn's Station if I want a $12 donut (including train fare).

then there's shakey's pizza. i always see movie references to the chain but never seen one.

  25. I am so glad I am not the only one that has noticed that there isn't one in the NY area. I got excited when I first saw the ads and then got sad when I say the closest one to me is over 2 hours away...in PA! We have a Melting Pot near by and it is awesome! We even got our waiter to give us the recipes for their Swiss cheese fondue & cheddar cheese fondue...can't wait to make our own.

  26. I have to tell you.. I have been checking your website for craft ideas ect. for I can't tell you how long. I don't even remember how I first found it. I actually feel like I know you personally now.. haha no, I'm not some creepy stalker, just a fellow crafter. Anywho, I work for a construction company that builds restaurants, and we were recently approved to start bidding on Sonics. I was feeling the same way about the commercials and finally they came to NJ, but its like an hour away, so I'll wait until they get closer. Anyway, I will keep you posted if I hear of one coming to PA.. thats where you are, right?? Swear to God, I ironically am meeting with franchisees tomorrow for their concept.. and they are from the PA area! I will let you know! I owe you that much after all the craft ideas I've gotten from you in the past! haha Thanks so much! - Salena
