torty

The smallest, quietest member of our household passed away. Torty died sometime last night.

I don't know what happened... we did notice recently he wasn't eating as much and sleeping more, but it wasn't enough to be alarmed at. It is hard to tell what a tortoise is thinking.

This morning, after giving Ernie some fresh water, I was giving Torty some lettuce when I noticed he was gone.

It wasn't supposed to happen like this... he was twenty years old, tops. Russian Tortoises are said to live to be 100. We used to joke how we would have him when we were old and grey.

I am going through the guilt thing... I should have taken him to the vet when he seemed off, I should have taken him outside more, taken more pictures of him...

Uggh... it's just horrible.

  10. So sorry for your lose.
It is always hard to know how pets are truly doing because they can't say "hey! I don't feel good!" And pets like Torty.

Sometimes it is just a pets time, even if it seems too soon.

  22. oh, that makes me so sad. :`(
I know that he was probably the happiest turtle in the world with you two. All animals feel love, even if it's just an understanding of safety and security.
I've always said with my many kitties throughout the years, and who I let go outside, it's better to have a short life filled with love and adventure, than a long one with nothing much to do. He had as full a life as a turtle should. :)
    I'm so sorry.

  23. I'll bet tortoise heaven is awesome! Right now, he's at the all you can eat leafy green veggie buffet and I'm sure there are more fine lady torts than he can shake a stick at!
He had a great 20 year adventure with you and you were both very lucky to have each other!
    It will hurt less soon.

Time will ease these feelings a bit.

  33. My dearest friend, I am sorry I was not here for you. I know you very well and know how much you love and care for your pets, so don't second guess yourself about Torty. He is having a party with Louie and Bunny and Guster. My Mom is probably feeding all of them.

My heart goes out to you though, it is never easy.
