Rubarb

Aaron just harvested some of his rhubarb. He sure does love rhubarb. I could hear him out in the kitchen chopping it up into freezer bags - humming happily to himself.

I took some of the rhubarb and made a strawberry rhubarb pie. That's how I like my rhubarb. Mmmm crumb crust.

  1. Oooh! Love rhubarb! I just made a whole batch of rhubarb syrup for rhubarb soda and mojitos.

  4. I've never tried rhubarb either. That pie looks so delish! What are other ways Aaron likes to eat rhubarb?

  5. No-one does rhubarb recipes like the English - check out the BBC, Nigella Lawson and Nigel Slater.

  6. Curious. What does rhubarb taste like? And are those stalks crunchy like celery is? I need to try rhubarb because that pie looks divine.

  7. Linda: You can't eat rhubarb raw, it has to be cooked in some form. I usually stew it, but you can make a mean pie out of it too. It tastes more like a fruit than a vegetable. It is very sweet and sour together, sort of like when you eat an apple with lemon juice on top (though to be clear, it doesn't taste like an apple).

It's hard to describe to someone who has never had it. You probably should try it around someone who already likes it, because I find that it's one of those foods people either love or hate.

p.s. If you do try to make some, always remove the green leafy part. It's not only inedible but poisonous!
