One of the things I love about going home is rooting through my mom and grandma's houses and getting the stuff they don't want anymore. From my mom I got this wood thread holder. My grandma gave me an extra applesauce maker strainer thingy she had. I can't wait to make homemade applesauce next fall.

Aaron thought they both looked like medieval torture devices.

there is a fancy french name for your strainer thingy, which eludes me. It can also be used to make very clear soup broths .... mmmmm!

How cool! I got my grandma's strainer thing, too. I've got great memories of using it to make raspberry jam. Yummy!

technically, ljc has a "china cap". a chinois has a fine mesh screen; a china cap is more like a cone-shaped colander.

the strainer thingy reminds me of many summer days spent while my Gramma and Mom did canning. i remember applesauce. they make it with various kinds of crabapples... they make a pink applesauce that is a little more tastey than regular apples.
