Aaron and I were wandering around the produce section as we so often do at Wegmans, when he called out... "Hey, check out these apples." I had never heard of Sonya apples and being the adventurous type I encouraged him to get one to try.

They are large apples, sort of shaped like a delicious with a pinkish red to yellow hue.

Imagine my surprise when I got home and noticed one Sonya apple rang up at $1.99! What!? Thank goodness he hadn't gotten a dozen.

Turns out they are a new breed of apple from New Zealand. Apparently mine flew all the way from New Zealand first class.

  1. I saw those at my SuperTarget. So, most importantly, how does it taste? My hubby tried a new apple variety recently and said it tasted like "dirty pool water at a motel". That made me laugh.

  3. You know, we almost always have to pay extra to get a new experience in the foodie arena.

Recently I bought both red & white Electra wine at the cheapest price I could find. It was heavily recommended by several, unrealted people over a long amount of time.

I hated both. I would have rather had Boones Farm. I could have bought 6 bottles of 2 Buck Chuck for what I paid for that nasty stuff. But at least I know now.

p.s. I remember you have some kind of reaction to alcohol, so convert that story to apples:)

  4. Did you see my late response regarding apples on Oct 28? Pink Lady apples are hitting the market. They are a variety from Australia that are now being grown in the US. They are very tasty, but run around $1.60 a lb. You can even buy Pink Lady t-shirts. I think they are worth the extra money cause I am less likely to let them sit around because of the taste and price. I am trying to committ to eating more fruit. Besides one looks more attractive while eating an apple (crunch, juice an all) rather then a greasy peice of pizza. *sigh* I don't always care about how I look.

  5. Wow! Something that has my name. I do eat a ton of apples too coincidentally. I hope they are good!

  6. Oh my. I just saw the new holiday flavors of Jones Soda in a Target ad. They have turkey and gravy and Brussels sprouts flavored soda. How can they hope to make that good? Turkey and gravy? Yikes. I was too scared to try the candy corn flavor. Now I'm terrified.

    I like your blog.

  8. Just tried the Sonya apples from Wegman's this weekend--they're good! Am not an apple expert but I think the taste is like a cross between an Empire apple and a pear.

  9. They were on sale at my Target for $.99 a pound yesterday. Still much cheaper than Honey Crisp ever were and they're huge! We love them. :)

  10. $1.99 lb at Cala, which in San Fran, is not more expensive than most. Pink flush over yellow with an unattractive greenish pall that makes them look like they're sitting under neon lights on the operating table.

Exceptionally juicy and sweet. One of the best snackin' apples for those who like em sweet. Recommended.

  11. I'm always glad to try new varieties of apples so I purchased several of the new Sonya apples today at my neighborhood Kroger. The price was around $1.60--not far out of line from the apples I prefer. Cheap apples do taste like dirty pool water! The Sonya apple was sweet and juicy. I prefer a tart apple so it wasn't my fav but I will probably purchase it another time. Braeburn is best!

  12. I think we payed 99 cents per pound for ours. I would pay the extra dollar per pound if I had to. They are my favorite for eating out of hand.

  13. I just purchased one Sonya apple for $1.23. It was a beautiful apple to look at, unfortunately the taste didn't match the image. The first taste wasn't bad, but as I continued to eat the apple, the sweetness assumed a slight cloying quality and the lack of body texture felt almost a little slimy. I would not buy tis apple againt, even if it were sold at bargain prices.

  14. I tried a Sonya apple because that is my name. Although where we live, they are $2.59 a pound, they are so much better than any others, I pay it even tho' I am niormally very tight.
