You take 270 pictures of your vacation and then you have to do something with those 270 pictures of your vacation. A lot of mine find their way into scrapbooks.

I have made quite a few of these in the past so I have some tips for taking pictures with scrapbooking in mind and ideas for the scrapbook itself. My scrapbooks are a little more on the traditional side. They are photo heavy and include things like tickets and maps rather than stickers and cutouts.

I took some sample pictures and added them to my project Gallery with the tips and ideas in the captions. I would love to hear what others are doing in their scrapbooks too.

  1. I think a shadow box would be a cool idea. Put shells and sand from the trip in the bottom of the shadow boxes, photos in the middle. I just have this weird fascination with shadow boxes.

  2. I love your scrapbooks, Jenny -- they look just like mine (except you have been to more exciting places!). I really dislike the overly-designed scrapbooks that are popular now. They seem way more about doodads that you buy in Michael's and less about the actual experiences they're supposed to document. Anyway, simple and lovely, like so many of the things I've seen on your site over the years. Thanks for sharing.

  3. I love your scrapbook...Mine look very similar to yours...It really is all about the pics & souvenirs rather than store-bought additions!

I also add interesting napkins, matchbook covers, programs from shows & foreign money to my scrapbooks. I love your ideas; I'll be using some of them in my scrapbooks.

  4. Lovely scrapbooks! I'm impressed you've already started scrapbooking your most recent adventure. I just started work on the one from our family vacation in January!
The tips for taking pictures are great. It's always easier to scrapbook when you have good pictures to work with and you've done an excellent job with that!

  5. Great tips! I'm with you- all about the pictures and tickets, maps etc. Less on all those extravagant embellishments. Wonderful ideas and photos you have!

  6. I am really amazed by all the things you manage to do. With some bloggers, it's easy to see what things they "let slide" in order to concentrate on certain hobbies, but you seem to do it all: cook, travel, decorate and maintain your home, entertain, garden, have pets, quality time with friends and family, do crafts, maintain a website, take photographs, assemble amazing gifts, and work full time!

Seriously, how do you do it??

  7. My scrapbooks are on the plain side, too, with lots of journaling since I anticipate losing my memory like my parents!
Now that I'm caught up with printed photos, I'm going to give digital scrapbooking a whirl to make 6x6 brag book pages (of my nephew and nieces) since I don't have a 12x12 printer and I want to print to the edge.

  8. Depends what mood I am in or the event/trip itself. Or if I find something neat at the craft shop. So sometimes they are picture heavy and others I add something extra to it.

  9. I love your idea of photographing your feet next to landmarks on the ground!

  10. Love your photo ideas!! I am a full on scrapbooker from Canada. With embellishments and all!! I mostly try to just use funky paper. I make sure to journal on every page. Simple is sweet, but I love to create works of art. Scrapbooking is like a mini vacation to me everytime I sit down to it.

  13. Oh, I forgot to mention that I've been subscribing to a magazine called "Simple Scrapbooks" that you may like. They are simple looking and straight-forward. Of course, I still haven't done a book yet, so, really, what do I know. Some of the people who work for the magazine have blogs.

  14. Kids seem to eat up all my scrapbooking time. Well, to be fair, homeschooling or moving 20 times in 13 years doesn't help either. Nor do floods. I was the scrapbook Queen before they were cool... and I'm stuck back on Kaden's 3rd and Morgan's 1st year... and they are now 9 and 7. It's too overwhelming, so I have just temporarily given up.

You shouldn't have any problems, Jenny - you have more creativity in your pinky finger than 90% of the people on this planet.

  15. I agree with Jaimie. I have so much admiration for you because you really put the effort into doing all those great things, including raising pets. I want to know how you do it too? What's the secret? I love coming here and seeing your great ideas, thanks!

  16. Although I've been collecting things on trips and vacations for years with scrapbooking in mind, I have always been so overwhelmed by all the stuff on the scrapbooking aisles in Hobby Lobby that I've never even started one. There is so much out there, I had no idea where to start. Thanks for showing how well it works to just keep it simple.

  17. THAT'S what I'm talking about! I feel like there are so many stickers and papers out there that I got lost in the point of what I'm trying to show. I've had my wedding stuff in a grocery bag for (gasp!) 4 years now, and your scrapbook may be the inspiration I finally needed to put it all together in a traditional yet striking way.

  19. Now that's a scrapbook. I hate the ones where you have to scan through all of the visual crap on a page just to find a teeny 1" x 1" photo of a kid.

  20. Great scrapbook and I loved your tips.

I had a friend who used to get postcards while she was travelling and jot notes on the back about where she'd been. A good way to keep track of what you've done on your travels if you don't keep a journal.

  21. Thanks for sharing your simple tips and ideas. I've been more of a rubber stamper, card maker that scrapbooker. Might have to give scrapbooking a try!

  22. I got really interested in scrapbooking a few summers ago, and plunked down a bunch of money in supplies, and lost steam after a few pages. I wanted to make cool, modern, funky pages, but when it took an hour to make a page, I lost interest quickly. Thanks to your simple design, I just might finish the darn thing! Why become a slave to design when it takes so long, and all I really care about are the pictures?
