Our zucchini crop started off with a bang. I had plans for baking loaves of zucchini bread, leaving zukes on porches and taking zukes to my hairdresser... then all of a sudden, the vines rotted, dried up and died. I was shocked. Then I heard it wasn't just us. The heavy rains and scorching heat created vegetable "carnage" everywhere.

The eggplants however are doing splendidly, so I am realigning my focus on future eggplant parmesean and eggplant sandwiches.

  1. Hmmm, while I love me some eggplant. I'm not sure I want an eggplant sandwich left on my front stoop.

  2. Your eggplants look fantastic! Our zucchini dried up and died, too, as did our cucumber, but I think we had some sort of disease attack our garden.

  3. I was wondering if you had planted a garden this year since I hadn't heard you mention it. The eggplant sandwich at Hogan's is the best!

  6. You can find some great recipes for grilled eggplant, and Cooks Illustrated has the best recipe for eggplant parm.

  7. Well! The same thing happened to my zucchini! I thought it was me because it was my first year planting veggies! But my eggplants are also doing splendidly as are my tomatoes!

  8. Our zucchini also died. But thanks to a friend of mine who is a master gardener, we figured out it was something called a vine borer. Stupid moth lays it's eggs at the base of the vine and the larvae bore into vine and feed on the vine from the inside. Gross! Your eggplant look great!

  9. I'm glad to find out that I wasn't the only one that had my zucchini dry up! It was my first garden EVER this year, I thought I had killed them:( I don't feel as guilty now.
