Cider and donuts

Today I met Aprille at Schutt's Apple Mill for cider and cider donuts!

We perched outside on the bench with bumpy pumpkins and enjoyed our treats as we watched the world go by.

#rocfallfarmtour - Robb Farms

When I first started posting about my #rocfallfarmtour mission, several friends on the west side of Rochester recommended Robb Farms.

I always take recommendations so we headed west. I was immediately greeted with the sweet, sweet words... APPLES N CIDER.

1. Cider - I'm used to going into the farm market and getting our jug of cider out of a cooler. At Robb Farms, they grab a jug and fill it up right there for you! FRESH!

Look at these nifty tubes they concocted to dispense the jugs. We really dug those.

2. Donuts - they had three kinds of donuts... apple crisp, cinnamon sugar and plain. Yes, please. A dozen, please.

3. Pumpkins - they have a yard full of pumpkin selections. I was amused by these carved ones nearby. I think the teeth glow in the dark.

4. Apples - and they have lots of apples. Plus they offer u-pick, which I love.

Robb Farms is smaller than some of the other cider mills and markets in the area but I like the family owned feel and you can't beat fresh cider!

Duck Donuts

When we got to Outer Banks I was looking at FourSquare when I noticed a lot of people checking into Duck Donuts. I didn't remember a donut shop from the last time we were at OBX. I piped up and made sure we stopped by to pick some up on the way to the beach house.

They are made to order and they are delicious! If you don't eat them right away pop them in the microwave for a few seconds to warm them up. So good! And check out this maple bacon donut! Decadent!

Fat Tuesday Donuts

I missed that last Tuesday was Fat Tuesday. I heard someone mention it was Pancake Day but it didn't sink in. Back home in PA we called it Fastnacht Day. My great aunts and my grandmother get together and make sugar coated delicious donuts. Here in Rochester, we can find a sort of fastnacht at Ridge Road Donut. Not quite like I'm used to but I'm an equal opportunity donut eater.

I noticed a few people tweeting about Paczki Day. Turns out, that is the Polish verson of my German Fastnacht Day. Aaron is a quarter Polish and felt the need to track down a paczki. We found some at Polska Chata.

Turns out there are lots of variations of "donut day" on Fat Tuesday. Portuguese have "Malasada Day" and New Orleans has beignets. I think everyone is on the right track!

Hand cut: Ridge Donuts

I recently saw a conversation online comparing Fairport Donuts with Ridge Donuts. Aaron was disturbed that he had not tried either of these. Joel R. said Ridge is his favorite so we went there first.

It seems like the donut they are famous for is their handcut donut, so we each got one. It was the heaviest donut I've ever encountered. It seemed to weigh as much as three bagels.

It was good though. So good.

Guess who is using Instagram now. I swiped this pic from him.

Donuts Delite back in business

Opened in 1958, Donuts Delite was a Rochester landmark. The donuts were pretty darn tasty too and Aaron I were frequent customers.

In 2005 - around the time of the Atkins Diet craze - Donuts Delite closed it's doors. This week, thanks to Salvatore's and the man whose grandfather started it all, Donuts Delite is back in business.

We went this morning to check it out. Sure enough they still had their classic banana creme filled and Flying Saucers!

Donuts Delite everybody!

Yum!
