Snail Confusion

Fish and Chip's bowl has been looking murky. For some reason, I got it into my head that a snail would help clear things up. So Aaron and I went to the pet store and got a perky looking Golden Inca Snail. It was rather anti-climactic when we dumped him in the bowl and he just lay at the bottom. Not exactly an action packed pet. This morning however I found him creeping up the side of the bowl. We named him Speedy.

I wanted to find a pic of a Golden Inca Snail (Ampullaris cuprina aurea) online. There was much confusion. This person incorrectly listed a Gold Inca Snail as a [Pomacea canaliculata] which is actually a Golden Apple Snail. That is what I have pictured here... the wrong snail.. but it does look a lot like Speedy. Although the bottom view is more of what one sees.

Turns out there is a lot more going on with these snails than you might think. There are scads of different species. And they apparently eat lettuce and cucumbers. Fascinating! Sorta. Speedy may turn out to be more than I had expected.
