This is the latest magazine I am in love with... Cook's Country. I was attracted to the cover and then I discovered it was from the Cook's Illustrated folks. My friend Joel swears by Cook's Illustrated, but I found the plain black and white illustrations... well... not very exciting.

Cook's Country, however, has all the great info CI has, but it also has cheery photos and graphics inside. I love the recipes too... I always thought about getting Gourmet magazine, but the dishes always seemed too elaborate for me. CC's recipes are mostly down home cooking with lots of 20 minute meals. Crunchy Potato Wedges and Sticky Ribs... Yum-meeeee.

  1. I used to subscribe to that, and then a couple weeks ago I received a random copy. Good thing, since it had a delicious recipe for baked fried chicken! I am now convinced that soaking anything in buttermilk is the key to deliciousness. Enjoy the mag!

  3. I LOVE my Cook's Country subscription. But check out page 16 (in this issue). Every month, they have the "Find the Rooster" contest. And every month, I feel like an idiot for not being able to find it!

  6. This is a great magazine. There are so many recipes in each issue. I love that my mom subscribes and gives them to me when she's finished!

  7. My husband also gets both Cooks Illustrated and Cook's Country. I agree with you - I enjoy looking at Cook's Country a lot more. I enjoy the photos and, I think that Cook's Illustrated's discussions are sometimes a little lengthy. I guess it depends what kind of cooking mood you're in!

You should check out "America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook" - it's written by the Cooks Illustrated folks and explains how to cook just about everything.. without the extended discussions about how they tested the recipe. We have that instead of the Betty Crocker/Better Homes and Gardens binders. :)

  8. Those hot f ugde chocolate cake things on the front? I made them in coffee mugs and they were freaking AWESOME! Out of the oven with a little whipped cream. I mean fantastic.

And the fried chicken recipe is also one of the best. I have been a subscriber for a while now and they have lots of good recipes.
