An instagram look back at 2013

I've been generating a lot of 2013 retrospective videos of instagrams and tweets from the past year.

This is an animated portrait of my Twitter account.

These were my top five instagram shots in 2013. A lot of pug.

These are all the pug instagrams from 2013. That's even more pug!

Here is a look back at Stewie, the sassiest cat of 2013!

Social Media Thoughts: Hashtags in Facebook

Another social media development that rolled out in July was the addition of hashtags in Facebook. There was a lot of talk about how it was going to take off like wildfire on Facebook. I had my doubts. There were some interesting campaigns from brands using hashtags on Facebook at first but there may be evidence that it's not really working.

Here is why I have suspicions. It's not the hashtags fault. I love hashtags on Twitter. It's a great way to zero in on a certain topic. When Spiderman was being filmed in downtown Rochester, I was able to keep track of what was happening from my office during the filming by following #spideyRoc on Twitter.

It's really handy at work too. I can follow what is being said about a particular product by following the hashtag. If we want to draw attention to a particular campaign, we use a hashtag to help call out the tweets.

But here is the difference between Twitter and Facebook. Facebook is much more private. If I want to learn something from the milions of people whose tweets I can see on Twitter, I search on the hashtag. If I want to learn something from the hundreds of people I'm friends with on Facebook... I just ask them.

The number of returns I would get on a search using #Roc from my private circle of friends on Facebook cannot compete with the wide swath sample I would get from a very public Twitter search.

And that is why I don't think hashtags are going reach the level of popularity that they have on Twitter. They are still fun to use in the usual mutter-under-your-breath, finger-quotation, kind of way though.

Me vrs Me on Twitter

I did this visual.ly comparison of my twitter accounts @ljc vrs @kodakcb. It confirms my suspicious that work me is more interesting and popular than off hours. Me. I was concerned about the frequency of the word "pot" from ljc until someone pointed out how often I twet about Melting Pot and Crock Pots. That makes total sense. At least both of us use the word "hah" a lot. Hah!

Puppy Tweets

I had seen these Puppy Tweets gadgets online that let your dog send tweets and thought they were funny. Lo and behold they were on clearance at Target after Christmas so we got one for Oscar and Hugo. Oscar has been tweeting up a storm, but it's a little big for Hugo. I did set up Hugo's twitter account though. : )

Tweep of the Year

Sometimes I get the distinct feeling work-me is more popular than regular-me. Work-me is nominated for Rochester Insider's Tweep of the Year. Regular-me isn't.

Here is the link if you would like to vote for work-me. It's kind of a pain because it's all through Facebook, but there you have it.

140 Conference

Yesterday and today I am at the 140 Conference in NYC. This afternoon I spoke on a panel about brands and Twitter. Always a little nervewracking to speak to a crowd but I love to talk about social media!

I took a few pictures while I was on stage and here is a pic of the crowd. Look at all those Mac laptops!

Rochester Twestival and Kawaii Not

Tonight we went to the Rochester Social Media Meetup and then the Rochester Twestival. It is always great to put faces to the twitter profiles! And the Twestival was for a great cause raising money for charity water.

Twestival had some raffle prized, of which Aaron had his eye on this...

(not this exact kit, it was the closest I could find)

As for myself, I was all eyes for the gift basket with goodies like buttons and a tote from kawaii not.

Aaron and I got this book awhile ago, long before last week when I discovered that author Meghan Murphy lives in Rochester! I didn't realize she had other products until I saw the gift basket. Aaron put a few tickets in for it. Here's hoping!

BubbleTweet

Today Tina discovered an app called BubbleTweet that lets you add little videos to your twitters.

When I got home I did a few of Oscar eating leftover pancakes.

Oscar pancake 1 and Oscar pancake 2

Then Stewie had to get in on the action and show off his "I forgot my pants" t-shirt. Only he is a whole lotta cat to fit in one small circle.
