Cool! I'd love to have a composter - I've also thought about a worm farm for vegetable waste...

Rain Barrels are COOL. Have one that is attached to the down-spout from the gutter. diverts the water until the barrel is full. Has a hose bib on it, and away you go. NOT expensive at all, and it is a SIMPLE Do It Yourself project. I saw it while watching Ask This Old House, and you can look it up on their site. Good luck -

We love our pet waste digester. Over a year of weekly big-dog deposits and no problems!

The Rain barrel is very cool, but did you see at the bottom of the doo doo digester page? Portable potties with biodegradable waste bags.... I VERY impressed. :)

awwww...jenny, do you really want to keep oscar, stewie, and ernie's "wastes" in a container that would sit outside, maybe in the hot sun? blehhhhhh

We got a discounted recycled New England Rain Barrel (http://www.nerainbarrel.com/) through our town recycling program. It is kind of an unsightly blue color, but the inside color resists algae and prevents the water from getting too hot. We spray painted the outside green with a few cans of Krylon plastic paint and it looks fine.

Love the rain barrel idea - I too saw it on "Ask This Old House" (gotta love PBS). Just gotta bite the bullet and order a few for our house.
As always, great post!

I have a rain barrel made from an old Kentucky whiskey barrel.
I talk about it here: http://www.twosheep.com/blog/?p=569

katie - they have the worm farms at composter.com too.. I gotta work myself up to that
megan - thought that might be good for long weekend camping
jess - hear hear!
pixie, abby and jenni - my parents got the composter through their county recycling program in PA. there are lots of composters online though. the little countertop pail came from target.com
emily - the site says that the pet waste digesters control odor... they do have lids. keep it up and I will make you scoop all the dog poop next time you come to visit!
jjzach - I am happy to hear about the algae resistance part!
june - nice rain barrel

We made our own Worm Bin recently. It was super easy and there is no smell. We already had an outdoor compost bin, but we have had enough food scraps to have both.

Jenny - Talk about matchy-matchy, I have the SAME composter in our backyard.
It's working out great, except those darn city squirrels have told their friends about the feast and keep trying to break in and eat our scraps.
If you live in the city - watch out.

Where did you get the rain barrell? I went everywhere locally asking for one of those in May and people thought I was crazy.

I have a doggie disposer system. My neighbors were worried about the stink it may cause. It works wonders to get rid of the poo and there's no stink as long as you maintain during the warmer seasons.

pixie - yeah... I think you are further east
elizabeth - the best thing I have found for my plants is consistant watering
bonnie - cool!
