Tina and I were wandering around Toronto the morning after the book signing and we happened upon a store front with two Smart ForTwo Cars in the window. They were each sitting upon four Wedgewood china teacups, one under each wheel. They. Are. So. Cute. We are both extremely bitter that we aren't getting them in the US until 2006. It's not even gonna be this cute version... but an SUV version! What the?! Not that I would give up my bug, but I think I could convince Aaron to switch from the jeep to one of these. Hmmm... wonder if he would fit?

  1. We saw these all over Italy on our honeymoon, and we laughed our butts off every time. I have to disagree on the cuteness...they looked kind of stupid to me, and totally impractical! For example, how exactly does it work when one needs to go to the airport with more than one piece of luggage? Those suckers don't hold much more than that. People just look ridiculous in them. We dubbed them "1/3 cars."

I think Minis are MUCH cuter. However, none of those small cars look so stupid when they're wedging into a teeny-tiny parking space. They must be pretty nice in that case! And I'll bet they get amazing mileage.

  2. My husband and I saw these cute little cars in Paris back in 2002. We both agreed that yes they are small, and the people there seem to drive a little, well, crazy, they don't have the behemouth SUVs and trucks there that we have in the states, so they don't need to worry about getting squished. That said, Mario Batalli from Food Network's show Molto Mario (from a few seasons back) drove one a cute little red one of these in an episode or two and he does not seem to be a small person. I'm sure your husband would fit just fine.
For some reason the US introduction of these cars keeps getting pushed back.

  3. A friend of mine has been driving a Smart for years. He's 6"5' and says that the car is perfect for his height. The seating position is very high, so there's enough room for his long legs while he can still comfortably reach the wheel without being in constant yoga position.

  4. I am in love with the Smart forfour! 30 different colour combinations! I may have to move to Canada. Or England.

  5. I am obsessed with anything France. Went to Paris/ Nice/ Aix-en-Provence and Lille this summer. Saw Smart cars EVERYWHERE! They have a SmartRoadster that is to die for! Plan to livei n France somday and drive one of these things around because they are TOO CUTE. And so easy to part on the street: drive straight at the side walk at pop the front two wheels on the curb, you'll fit anywhere.

  6. LOL!!! Looks like the car Steve Urkel had on the show "Family Matters"

I would get a Mini Cooper instead, or keep the beetle myself.

  7. When I graduated college my dad sent me to Switzerland as a gift. When I got there I saw people driving these tiny cars everywhere and I thought to myself these look like circus cars!! I wanted one so bad. Especially after I saw they handled very well in the snow too. I had to get my picture taken by one so everyone could see these tiny cars. I can't wait for them to get here because it's been four years since I've longed for one!! Yay!!!!

  8. I like this car! I don't think it's stupid. I saw this car in Taiwan everywhere. If you live in big city you'd appreciate its size. You can park easily and go through crowded traffic faster than other big cars. Most of cars in US are huge and dumb. Even the MINI is bigger than Europe version.
