I am a big fan of Alton Brown, but I do not subscribe to his avoidance uni-taskers. I like gadgets, so I have lots of kitchen appliances that only do one thing... an electric egg cooker, avocado slicer, cake tester...

I couldn't help but get one of these Oxo mango slicers. I love mango, but I do not love slicing the slippery fruit away from the seed.

As you can see, it worked really well this morning and I feasted on mango for lunch.

  1. Where did you find this gadget? I am a HUGE mango fan, but also hate trying to get the delicious flesh off the annoying pit.

  2. Seriously. You should go through one day and make a list of the gadgets you have in your kitchen. I get such inspiration from your cooking adventures. I've sadly never tried mango though but I will have to get an avacado slicer.

  3. I need one of those. Where did you find it?

I'd also like to know if you are running out of room yet with all of the gadgetry. I would!

  4. I'm glad you posted this, b/c I was curious if that mango slicer actually worked.

I've been trying to figure out how Thai people can slice the mango away from the seed, and then cut it into squares and then cut it away from the skin.

  5. LOL! I was preaching the unitasker mentality to Ani just yeseterday. I do love the idea of it (and many minimalist ideas) but they're just so hard to follow in reality. I do have a popcorn popper (only pops popcorn to my knowledge) and an apple slicer. The temptation is always certainly there.

  7. Stacey - I got it in the produce section of Wegmans... I bet you could find it at any kitchen supply store that sold Oxo though.

Vintage Lilac - I have a small pantry closet off of the kitchen and a root cellar in the basement that had shelves added. They are both packed to the gills.

Chevy - I found this page and others with mango cutting techniques...

the cubing part works well, but I have trouble with removing the seed, which is why I love this tool so much.

Jesser and FoodieChickie - he he... I have two popcorn poppers (whirly pop and air popper) and an Oxo apple corer/wedger and an old fashioned hand crank apple corer/slicer/peeler. I am out of control!!!

  8. I LOVE my mango slicer - some unitaskers are SO worth it. I've sent one to my mom and I've got one to send to my friends in Australia. It's so friggin' dreamy and with the Bed, Bath & Beyond and Linens & Things coupons floating around, it's even better!

  9. Alton just had a show on last night about slicing mangos. He cut both ends flat and then used a corn holder to hold the mango steady from the top as he cut the flesh off from top to bottom.

  10. I saw that show with Alton and completely agree with Jenny! The mango slicer just can not be beat! I never can seem to get close enough to the pit and it is perfectly shaped for that. Also, it lies relatively flat in a drawer so it's not like it takes up so much space.

  11. There should be a club Jenny for people like us.

  12. Thanks for the site! I have tried and tried to slice it on both sides, but it seems like I can never get close enough. Maybe Thai people just waste the middles to get that perfect cubed look.

    BTW: Williams-Sonoma has one.

  13. I know this is probably a bit late in the game, but I saw that there was some question as to what Thais do when we leave too much mango on the seed. That's easy enough--you hand it to the kids to gnaw on. When I was growing up, this was my family's version of the cake batter mixer paddle.

  14. I watch Good Eats too, and have tried to follow the anti-unitasker mantra like Jesser. But I saw Bobby Flay on CBS's Sunday Morning show last week raving about the mango slicer, so I'm going to buy one! I had just cut up a mango the day before, and while I'm pretty good at it, it looks like this is one unitasker that is worth it. I'm sure I'll buy more mangoes if I have it. And I have a $5 off coupon from Bed Bath Beyond. Here I come!
