I like seeing these Wooly Bear caterpillars. The old wives tale is that the wider the middle brown section is, the milder the coming winter will be. A narrow brown band predicts a rough winter.
There may be something scientific to this... but in regards to the past winter, not the coming winter.
I'd rather think they are a forecast of the coming winter... cuter story.
