Yar... today was my birthday... 31 years old. I was blathering on at lunch (Sticky Lips BBQ!) about how I am really in my thirties now because when you are thirty you couldn't be on Thirtysomething... cause your just thirty... but now.. I am thirtysomething... thirty.... one. I got a couple concerned stares.

This evening Aaron made me an amazing cake replica of my green beetle complete with a mini me (Dora the Explora... Tina's sister thinks she looks like me). It was delish also. My big present from Aaron was a violin, complete with violin lessons. I have always wanted to play an instrument and I love the violin. I can't even read music so I am waiting til after the wedding to see if we can teach this old dog a new trick.

Love the cake! And a violin as a gift?! Aaron rocks. :)

  2. Happy Birthday! A violin is a great gift! Wow! I started playing when I was about 11 but I've lost practice in the last couple of years. I'm sure you'll get the hang of it, though.

  5. i want to learn to play the violin. I play the piano-not very well and tried the flute (too hard). Guitar is hard too---I give up too easy.

Good luck. I wish my husband would make me a cake. Very cool.

  9. Hey Jennifer~ I'm Jennifer too. Just warning you, I've played piano, clarinet and violin...and violin was the hardest instrument to start playing (I minored in Piano and Clarinet performance at UCSD). I highly recommend the Suzuki method for violin playing, it is a great way of learning to play the violin!

  16. Happy Birthday! You'll love the violin. I started playing at age 5 with a private Suzuki method instructor, and I played through college. I agree with Jennifer - the Suzuki method is AWESOME. I highly recommend it. Have fun!!! :)

Let us know how you make out with the violin lessons. This 30-something used to play as a kid, but quit. I'd love to take it up again.

  24. Happy Birthday! I just began taking violin lessons a year and a half ago - it's a thing where you either pick it up fast in the beginning then slow down, or pick it up slowly, then learn faster. It's really fun though! ;) If you look on the internet, you can find some great sites to help you, just remember the strings go G D A E! :) G is the lowest, E is the highest!! Also rosten your new bow like mad or else it won't grab the strings/won't play.
Post your playing when you begin, it's always fun to look back and hear how you started. - Jen - Yentl22@aol.com

  33. Happy Belated Birthday! Violin lessons sound wonderful. That's such a thoughtful gift from Aaron. How'd you get him to bake on his own? and a beetle cake, nonetheless?

  34. to all yall people trying (or going to)a Violin or other stringed instrument (not guitar, they can speak for themselves) Dont give up! Get Private lessons, whatever it takes, talk to an experienced ____ist (Violinist, Violist Cellest, etc) and get the answers you need. whatever you need!
