I know our sense of smell can be pretty powerful. And I don't just mean stuff like how the smell of crayons remind you of your first grade classroom or how men are most attracted to the scent of "cinnamon buns, followed by lavender, vanilla, doughnuts, and pumpkin pie".

Some studies show things like.... "The scent of peppermint oil temporarily improved tactile function for 10 blind children" and "Increase in blood pressure following exposure to irritating odors".

So you gotta wonder about a product like the new Scentstories. You play discs like music cd's... except instead of sound the player give off scents... one every 30 minutes for two and a half hours. I think they should combine this product with sounds... so you could smell the ocean and hear waves... smell pine and hear a babbling brook... smell pototo chips and hear *crunch crunch*. Ok I am just kidding about the last one.

  1. If I could smell garden tomato all night, I'd buy it.

  2. Waaaay back in the early 80's/late 70's, they had something similar to the Scentstories device. I don't know what it was called, but it was made to look like an external floppy disk drive (like for a Commodore 64,) and the disks were made to look like 5.25" floppy disks. They were foam-and-plastic disks infused with the popular 80's scents...sandalwood and nauseating cherry. I only saw this contraption at one place (architect's office where Dad worked) and never anywhere else. I'm curious to see one again. *Brie*

  3. This reminds me of a company I heard about back in the late 1990's during the .com frenzy--I think they were called iSmell or something like that. They created a device to incorporate scents into the web surfing experience. For instance, if you visited a website that was iSmell-enabled (say a chocolate company), their gizmo, which would be connected to your computer, would produce the smell of chocolate! Neat idea, but not terribly practical, as it would seem that the number of sites that would benefit from it would be rather limited.

  4. when i smell body shop's oceanus i have instant flashbacks of living in belfast!! i see pictures inside of my head of the busy streets, the super green grass, cars, the ocean, and things i did there and it also makes me remember other smells like the typical city smell of car fuel and the rain... it's amazing! i've even had times when i've sniffed my almost empty body shop oceanus perfume oil bottle (which i've saved all these 8-9 years for this special purpose, to remember) and started crying because it triggers this enormous love that i have for northern ireland and it makes me sad that i'm not there. smell sure is a powerful sense!!

  5. I wonder if it really works. I'm the sucker that always falls for that stuff. I buy it and it ends up in some box later.
