I have not been feeding my garden plants weird chemicals, I swear. I don't know why they do freaky stuff. Two butternut squash grew right into the fence and one carrot looks like a science experiment. Anybody have recipies for half a squash?

  1. wow, those are some crazy looking veggies! I don't know about recipes for 'half a squash', but a good use for butternut is steaming and then purréeing the flesh for use in soups.

  2. Eep! Funny how much your veggies look like some of the monster-softies that populate craft fairs. Hee hee!

  3. hey jenny,
your carrots have root knot nematodes. I don't think you should eat them. I'm told they don't really grow carrots up here on a commercial basis because the nematodes are so bad.

  5. skweerell - you really freaked me out about the nemotodes... but they are harmless...

Root Knot Nematode (nematode - Meloidogyne spp.): There are no diagnostic symptoms seen on above-ground plant parts. When infected carrots are examinged, galls can be seen on adventitious roots and there is often multiple tap-root formation [Photo #5] or malformed roots. Although deformed carrots are culled at the packing shed, nematodes contained in the roots are not harmful to humans when consumed.

  6. I once had carrots that were a little kinky. There were actually three of them and they seemed to be spooning eachother! I put a picture of them on flickr.

  8. hmm, i wonder how they will taste. Maybe you could put them out for Halloween & scare the kiddies - or your pets.

When will your banner turn to fall?
