Letterpress II

I've been taking the Letterpress II class at Genesee Center for Arts and Education this summer. It's given me a chance to finish up some of the projects I started in Letterpress I.

This is a mnemonic that helps you remember the order of the letters in a California job case... B, C, D, E, I, S.... I love the hot pink ink I chose.

This is one of the bookmarks I made... do you get it? I thought it was pretty clever, but I've received a lot of blank stares.

And this was my big project. Using my set of Aldine wood type, I set this arrangement with the military alphabet.

I guess letterpress is getting into my blood because I actually think this t-shirt is pretty funny.

Letterpress book plates

I finished my second letterpress project... personalized book plates. They are printed on paper with an adhesive back so they stick inside the book. Don't be a turkey... heh heh.

Lovin' Letterpress

I have been meaning to take a letterpress class at Genesee Center for Arts and Education. When I heard my friend Joel signed up for Lovin' Letterpress I, I figured it was time to sign up.

The Printing and Book Arts is a printing heaven. They have multiple presses and drawer upon drawer of fonts.

We spent the evening learning to handset type from a California Job case by setting our names and addresses.

We were all pretty pleased with ourselves when we proofed our little projects.

Letterpress workshop

Years ago, Aaron got me a gift certificate for a letterpress workshop at Genesee Center for Arts and Education. Today we finally went and took the workshop.

We got a brief history on letter press and then a walkthrough of the process. After spending a lot of time pouring over the different fonts and graphics we had our layout. We got to run the press and print several copies of what would be folded into a book.

I have a much better appreciation for what it takes to get a layout that has arrangement and spacing just how you want it.

Here is our finished 11x17 print.

I was excited to have a chance to use my Martha Stewart bone folder to fold the sheets into a little book.

Here is the finished book! I can't wait to take another workshop or class!

Arts Auction

This evening we attended Genesee Center for Arts & Education's spring carnival and arts auction. I bid on several really cool letterpress posters and lost out on all of them. We did however manage to place the winning bid on this Aldine wood type alphabet. We could probably actually use it - I have a gift certificate to a GCAE letterpress workshop... but I also think it looks cool enough just like this to hang on a wall! Score!
