For a small dog Oscar sheds an excessive amount of hair. It's not in clumps or anything like that, but it was definitely hard to keep up with.

Aaron and I had some Christmas money stashed away so we decided to use it on a Roomba. Initially, I was nervous seeing as how it is made by iRobot and I had just seen the movie, I Robot. I was convinced I would wake in the night with Roomba trying to suck up my head. But we ordered it and it's great! We had to do an initial sweep of the house first to get the ginormous dust bunnies, but now through the week Roomba wanders around keeping the Oscar hair, Ernie wool and general dirt in check.

It is so clever, it bumps and twirls it way around the floor, under the couch and right back to the docking station to charge back up when it's tired. I was so happy I almost cried.

Oscar on the other hand was not so thrilled. See the following video for the Oscar/Roomba encounter. I especially like it when Oscar looks at me as if to say "How could you bring this into my house?"

Great video! I'm still snickering. Oscar's "Why me?" moment was even funnier since the Roomba snuck up on him...do you suppose he'll get used to it after you've had it for a while, or will it always confuse him? :)

Aww. Poor Oscar. That is so adorably funny!
By Blogger Yvett, at 4/4/05 11:12 PM

OMG that is so funny! Mostly because I can totally picture my two cats reacting exactly the same way (although obviously not barking.) Hmmm, would I be evil if I bought myself a Roomba for the sole purpose of being entertained by my cats' reaction?
By Blogger Jennifer, at 4/4/05 11:16 PM

Too. Funny!

Poor Oscar! I so want a Roomba, if only to torture my pets in the same manner.
By Blogger Pixie, at 5/4/05 1:00 AM

I love Oscar's reaction. He's like my dog Waldo! He sheds a lot for a short hair dog. And I would love a Roomba but I'm worried Waldo will actually jump onto it. And I don't think a Roomba can take 67 pounds of bulldog pouncing on it. Can it?

oh that's funny! thanks for sharing the video!

Too cute!!! How does the roomba work on wood floors? I'm curious about the roomba now. I have the same hair upkeep problems with my cats.

Awwww poor Oscar. That was a funny clip. Must look into Roomba. Thanks for sharing.

Thats so funny! We were discussing whether or not to get it too but didn't know what our pug would do since his mortal enemy is the vaccum cleaner!
By Blogger Auntslappy, at 5/4/05 1:24 PM

that is adorably-to-be-expected! i don't know much about dogs, but how long does/did it take for him not to bark at it? apparently non-pet owners start considering their robotic vacuum cleaners as pet substitutes and name them =D
By Blogger wyn, at 5/4/05 4:17 PM

Ha, when my dog heard oscar barking, she ran around the house trying to find him. She would kill my in my sleep if I got one of those things.

Great video!!!!! I loved Oscar's look. I think we need to get a roomba and see what our cats do to it... I think they might just run away.
By Blogger marirob, at 5/4/05 10:29 PM

Oh my goodness. You are right; that look is too funny! And when it sneaks up on him...LOL!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 5/4/05 10:38 PM

The rug is from Ikea... a great deal!

I just wanted to say that Oscar is so freaking adorable!!!
By Anonymous AmyBabbit, at 6/4/05 1:00 AM

Oh my gosh, that is just soo adorable!! I need to get one too but aren't thay pretty pricy? I love your page, never been here before :D
By Anonymous Veronica, at 6/4/05 10:02 AM

Hahaha! That's so funny! Oscar is soooo adorable. I bet he's also thinking, "Don't just stand there...do something!"
By Anonymous Alicia, at 7/4/05 2:56 PM

I'm thinking of asking for one of these for my birthday! So you're supposed to keep them on all the time throughout the week? I never knew that. Are they noisy?
By Anonymous Beckie, at 7/4/05 11:05 PM

That's very funny! I thought Oscar's look at the camera was more of a "What? Aren't you going to help me?" plea.
By Blogger Joel, at 11/4/05 6:07 PM

I do not agree with the Roomba owner or some of the others who have seen the video clip that scaring a dog with the machine is cute. It is not cute. It is cruel. It is replusive. The dog owner's laugh when the dog is surprised from behind is gruesome.

*cough* Get a sense of humor *cough*

I just bought the Roomba Scheduler today. Holy mackeral is this thing awesome. I have a Siberian Husky that is shedding like crazy right now and was worried that Roomba would not handle the immense amounts of fur, but it cheerfully went about its business with aplomb. And for those concerned about the humane treatment of animals *eyeroll*, Sequoia pretty much ignored the thing, and just walked away with a curious look on his face when Roomba got close to him.
