Joel told me about a story he heard on NPR about kids addicted to Flaming Red Hot Cheetos and schools banning them due to their junk food status and their red powder that gets over everything.

If thousands of school kids loved them... then I probably would too. I found two snack sized bags at Target and sent one home with Tina. She called me moments later to tell me her thoat was on fire. They aren't that hot to me... but they are pretty tasty. Tasty enough to risk sneaking a contraband bag into the office in the event they are banned there? Probably not... but the story is interesting.

Update: I noticed red stains on the thumb and forefinger of my left hand and couldn't figure out where it came from... then I realized those were the fingers I was eating the Cheetos with! It's not coming off!

  1. OMG! I am completly addicted to those! I always write about how much I love hot cheetos. My friends know about this obsession and actually give me bags as gifts. I eat them with lime (not the kind that comes with lime). I'm forever waiting for the hot cheeto diet and/or patch so I could stop eating those.

  2. I hate those damn flaming cheetos. They are evil and are probably the cause of anything bad in the universe. I've never tasted them, nor will I. I teach 8th grade and this is seriously the ONLY food that I refuse at all costs to be even seen in my classroom. The little red fingerprints.....AHAHAHAH!

  5. I'm addicted beyond belief to those hot cheetos! They are quite a bit messy though. My MIL works for Frito Lay and brings home a TON of them about once a week so I haven't ran out...yet.

  6. It's funny... after few minutes it seemed as though they had numbed my tastebuds a bit and ther wasn't much flavor with each bite... however, ?I couldn't stop eating them. It's like my brain just knew they taste good despite the fasct that my mouth no longer did.

  7. I also love hot cheetos with a twist of lime. Take a 1/4 lime squeeze into the bag. Close bag and shake. TASTY. I avoid the red-finger stains by eating straight out of the bag using chopsticks.

  9. I LOVE those things. The ones with lime are even better. However, I did have a rather unfortunate accident spilling them in my purse. Red everywhere.

  10. I just got back from Belize and met people who enjoyed their Cheetos with hot sauce poured right into the bag! I saw a lot of red-stained fingers...

  11. I sometimes pour hot sauce into my popcorn bag. Frank's Red Hot is the BEST!

Has anyone stuck their red stained finger in their eye to see if it still burned or was just stained?

Would someone please? Really, not kidding. I'm curious:)

  12. when i was a teacher in texas four years ago, hot cheetos were banned from my school not just because the powder stained but for a far more disgusting reason. it's gross. ready?

a few kids who overindulged in hot cheetos ate so many that it made them puke. the vomit itself could not be removed from the school carpeting. so the hot cheetos had to go.

  13. Schools are also starting to eliminate pop machines. I wonder at what point organic food will enter schools?

  15. Silly monkeys, all the hip junior high kids know that the only way to eat flaming hot cheetos is to swipe them through some whipped cream cheese.

As my 12-year-old taught me to do today.
