Love locks

The last time I was in Cologne, I noticed there were a few locks attached to the fence along the railway on the Hohenzollern bridge. At that time, two years ago there were less than 50 locks there I would say. This time there were hundreds.

I couldn't believe how many locks had been added in two years.

You could spend all day looking at the various locks.

There are so many different kinds of locks. Some are engraved, some written on with a Sharpie.

Most are the names of the couple and what I guess is the day they were married.

Some added embellishments.

Love this big heart lock. Next time I go, I will be sure to have a lock to take with me.

Eating in Germany

Of course I cannot go without a post about the food I had in Germany. Each night I had a good ration of meat, cabbage and potatoes. Pictured here - red cabbage fried potatoes and some sort of 'wurst. I was disapointed it didn't hang off both sides of my plate like the last time.

Really I had enough meat to last a month. Although the menu said this was pork ribs, it was more like a mild slice of ham. With saurkraut and mashed potatoes.

This right here was the grandaddy of all meals. Pork knuckle. I was nervous to try it, but it wasn't all that unusual. And it was delicious! Standard saurkraut and potatoes were present also.

I imagine a lot of people would also consider beer another food group - especially the local specialty Kolsh. They serve it in small narrow glasses so it is always fresh. Some spots serve it from a round tray that hangs by a handle and this restaurant served it by the meter. I was fascinated by the graffiti on the meter servers.

Much to the disbelief of my dining companions, I did not partake of the Kölsch so I felt compelled to leave this note on one of the meters - "Ljc didn't have any beer, but Ljc was here"

Grape Festival

I got back from Germany just in time to go to the Grape Festival in Naples.

Grape pies, grape juice, grape bread and grapes right off the vine.

These grapes are so good for eating straight up.

The pies are pretty darn good too.

I just want to point out... if these are made daily... they probably aren't antique.

Pet of the Week

Well I couldn't get this out of my head. Stare into this beagle's big brown eyes and listen to this tune.

Mandy #11474777

If you’re a Beagle lover, we have a winner for you! Meet Mandy, a 2.5-year-old, who’s at Lollypop Farm because her previous owner no longer had time for her. She’s 23 pounds of cuteness, punctuated with a big vocabulary. In her kennel, she’s busy making sure you know she’s there, once outside the chatter stops! Mandy does well on a leash; she’ll trot right along, keeping her nose constantly to the ground to check things out. If you want to meet Mandy, bring your children, and any dogs who share your home, to meet her. Children over the age of 6 are recommended. Mandy is busy interviewing potential families, so don’t delay if you think she’s your girl!

Stormy, the cat from last week, is still waiting to find her forever home.

Apple picking

After a week of obsessively checking the website, Whittier Fruit Farms finally had Honey Crisp on their You Pick list Saturday morning. We made a last minute decision to go and pick some before Aaron dropped me off at the airport. Apple eaters Tina and Lauren joined us.

The wee little ones don't taste as good as you think they might.

With a few more inches in height Lauren is becoming quite the apple picker, but still small enough to get stuck in the apple bucket.

The apple guard dog came by to say hi.

We also got a bag of SweeTango to split on our way out... as a University of Minnesota co-op, Whittier is one of the few places you can find them. Soooo good. Can't wait a couple more years when those trees are big enough for You Pick!

Anthology Magazine

I just heard about this new magazine, Anthology.

They describe Anthology as "A new quarterly shelter and lifestyle print magazine that takes a narrative approach to its coverage of home décor, travel, design, entertaining, and culture."

I loved some of the photos I saw, so I ordered the first issue to get a better look.

Their blog is worth a look, they had this post about using book pages as wallpaper.

New Guster album - Easy Wonderful

I am pretty excited for Guster's new album, Easy Wonderful, on October 5. They have a lot of goodies leading up to the release. You can download one of the songs for free and they just released the first music video. There is going to be a video by a different director for every song on the album!

Guster in their underwear - har har.

The only thing I'm bummed about is that Rochester isn't on their tour. : (

Food in Toronto

We had some tasty food in Toronto. The highlight was probably the last thing we had before leaving town. We stopped at the Drake for brunch and I spied these scones on the menu. They were so buttery and crumbly. The vanilla cream and gooseberry jam were amazing too.

I love brunch. Not just brunch food but what brunch means. It means you didn't have to get up early for breakfast and you are having a laid back day.

It was such a good brunch.

Blackberry lemonade!

Of course we had to have crepes again.

I think Crepes a Go Go is my favorite restaurant in Toronto.

We tried something new this trip too... we went to a Korean BBQ. I think Tina really enjoyed fiddling around with the grill.
